Defending champions Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann of Germany got off to a blazing start to advance into the second round of the 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool at Robinsons Place, Manila with an 8-1 whipping of the Serbian duo of Andrea Klasovic and Zoran Svilar on Tuesday.
On the eve of their match Souquet fell ill with food poisoning and had to be given intravenous drips and medical treatment.
But that didn?t faze the German stalwart who belongs to the group of younger players who believe in working out in the gym to stay in shape and it proved helpful as Souquet and Hohmann won handily although the Serbs had their chances but were unable to convert them.
In a post match interview former World Pool Champion Hohmann paid tribute to his partner. He said ?I think Ralf played great. I made a few more decision making mistakes than him.?
Hohmann said ?The big factor was the break. We still haven?t figured it out but we got lucky because when we left it open they missed a few times or they didn?t have a shot and had to play safe or kick. Then they would leave it open and of course once it?s open, it?s easy for us.?
While conceding that the 8-1 score made it look easy Souquet said ?The score makes it looks like it was an easy match but it wasn?t really. We have a day a half to rest now which is good. I?m very weak. Except for a piece of dry toast this morning, I haven?t eaten anything since yesterday.?
In the second match of the first session, last year?s shock finalists Thailand took a while to get into their rhythm against Southeast Asian neighbors Malaysia with the score tied at 4-4 before the Thai pair rattled off the final four racks to win 8-4.
Nitiwat Kanjanasri & Kobkit Palajin had scored a succession of upsets at last year?s tournament to reach the final and this time round, perennial Malaysian contenders Patrick Ooi and Ibrahim bin Amir were no match for them. The Thais can now look forward to either England or Belgium.
In a cliffhanger the Canadian duo of Alex ?The Lion? Pagulayan and John Morra held their nerve in a hill-hill encounter marked by a safety battle before pulling through 8-7 against the Swedish pair of Marcus Chamat and Andreas Gerwin.
Pagulayan who enjoys dual citizenship opted to play for Canada where he receives good support compared to what he receives in the Philippines which helps keep his pool career going, internationally.
They will face the winners of the final match on opening day between two-time winners Efren ?Bata? Reyes and Francisco ?Django? Bustamante and the Hong Kong duo of Lee Chenman and Kenny Kwok.
