Chad Dawson who is considered one of the top light heavyweights in recent years will move down in weight to battle Andre Ward who is undoubtedly one of the finest super middleweight fighters and regarded as a future top pound for pound contender.
The Dawson-Ward showdown will take place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland with Ward?s WBC and WBA title belts on the line and will be telecast on the widely watched ?Big Time Bakbakan? over SKTV IBC 13 at 12:00 on Sunday, right after ?The Main Event? which will feature a preview of the Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez ? Josesito Lopez and Julio Cesar Jr ? Sergio ?Maravilla? Martinez title fights the following Sunday.
The 30 year old Dawson was quoted by boxing writer Santos A. Perez in an article in the Miami Herald saying ?If I go down, if everything works according to plan and I win the title and I?m looking for fights in either weight class, I think 168 [pounds] is a lot more loaded than the light-heavyweight division.I also do think that those guys at 168, including Andre Ward, will be coming up to light-heavyweight real soon.?
With a record (31-1, 17 KOs, 1 NC) Dawson began a new stint as light-heavyweight titleholder with a majority decision over an aging Bernard Hopkins to win the WBC title last April 28.
Dawson isn?t bothered by the fact that the fight against Ward will take place in Ward?s hometown. He said ?I don?t care that the fight?s in Oakland. I don?t care that it?s at 168 pounds because I know I?ll be comfortable and everything is going to go my way.?
Athens Olympics 2004 gold medalist Ward who is undefeated with a record of 25-0 with 13 knockouts won his first world title when he defeated WBA champion Mikkel Kessler.
He laid claim to being the top fighter in his division after beating Carl Froch by a convincing twelve round unanimous decision in the final of a six-fighter, super-middleweight tournament last year.
Ward was quoted by Perez as saying ?I respect my opponent; I understand who I?m fighting. Obviously, I?ve honed in on him a little bit more as of late since this fight had been signed. I?m looking forward for a tremendous fight. Once again, I got another great competitor at the other end of the ring, but I plan on getting my hand raised.?
