Robert Rodriguez upsets Fernando Carcamo in Commerce Thriller

When when two young and ambitious heavy punchers collide in the ring, expect fireworks and mayhem. And, that is just what happened last night at the Commerce Casino, when reigning WBC Youth World Lightweight Champion Fernando Carcamo, 10-4-0, 7KOs, of Cuidad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico, got the upset ax from Colorado's Robert Rodriguez, 7-1-0, 3KOs in three rounds of pure action in a non-title main event of a George Karambalas Boxing Promotion. The two upstart combatants fought fast and furious from the get-go, with each boxer wanting to dictate the tempo and control the fight. Fernando Carcamo attacked his opponent with a probing jab, followed up with strong left and right crosses to the body, but Robert Rodriguez, using distance and balance, also retaliated with powerful counters to the head and body that often shook Carcamo. The action continued ebb and flow with neither fighter giving up ground, but sustaining momentum, and keenly awaiting to pounce on the fighter that slows down. In the fateful third round, Fernando Carcamo, while pressing the fight, suddenly ran smack into a cracking counter right hook to the jaw that buckled his knees, and Robert Rodriguez, sensing a kill, unloaded heavy artillery on the fading Fernando Carcamo who took a mandatory eight count after he was bombed into the ropes that supported his fall. Tottering afterwards and virtually helpless against the ropes from the renewed onslaught of his foe, Referee Zach Young stopped the fight and officially ruled it a 3rd round TKO victory for Robert Rodriguez. It will be back to the drawing boards for Fernando Carcamo who had come off from a rousing second round stoppage of the undefeated Fidel Maldonado, Jr. to capture the WBC Youth World Silver Lightweight title last April 2012, in Pueblo, New Mexico. On the other hand, it was a redemption for Robert Rodriguez, who had challenged and lost a narrow majority decision to Russian Andrey Klimov for the latter's WBC US (USNBC) Lightweight crown at the Finish Line Sports Grill in Pomona, California, last March 2012.

The rest of the bouts:

In the supporting 6-rounder, Jesse Roman scored a third round TKO over Hughes Lawrence in their Welterweight contest. Jaime Osegueda knocked out Jose Martell in the second round of another Welterweight fight. Junior Middleweight Jose Leon registered a first round KO of Hector Castro. And, Carlos Rodriguez defeated Ralph Prescott by a unanimous decision (40-36 across the board) in the other Junior Middleweight bout.
