France?s light flyweight Jeremy Beccu who dropped a controversial 17-18 decision to Kazakhstan?s Birzhan Zhakypov in the round of 32 at the London Olympics boxing competition has cried foul.
Beccu couldn?t hold back the tears as he spoke to the media after his heartbreaking loss to Zhakypov on Tuesday, Manila Time.
Beccu said ?Its really unfair. I should have won. Nobody can convince me otherwise.
The 21 year old Frenchman was leading by one point going into the third and final round before losing by a point in the final tally by the judges.
Beccu lamented, ? I don?t understand it. The first round was given 6-6 and I clearly won it.?
Beccu blasted the AIBA appointed boxing judges saying ?I knew I also had to fight against the judges.?
Reports from the ExCel Arena said Zhakypov looked as he had accepted defeat as he stood wiping his eyes awaiting the scores.
Beccu stood in the center of the ring with his hands on his hips after the decision.
The French coach Jean Savarino was seething over the decision. He said ?I?m angry, the decision is not fair. However, the result is there, its just another injustice.?
Fight News reported that Beccu, the 2008 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championship bronze medalist was up against the 28 year old Beijing veteran of four AIBA World Boxing Championships.
It said the orghodox Frenchman was by no means overawed by the pedigree of his opponent as he went toe to toe with him to finish the first round level on points with both fighters throwing a lot of punches.
Fight News said that in the second round Beccu dictated proceedings from the center of the ring. landing a couple of sweet uppercuts to take the round by a single point.
The report said the battle between Zhakypov and Mark Anthony Barriga of the Philippines promises to be an electrifying fight.
Meantime, Super Sport said the spectators in the packed arena saw a new sensation from the Philippines.
It noted that at 1.57 meters Barriga can barely look over the ring?s top rope but he made a big impression on Tuesday, showing off quick footwork and a rasping left hook.
It said before the start of the Games, Barriga trained with the Philippines greatest sportsman Manny Pacquiao who has won professional world titles in eight weight classes. Barriga who has been given the nickname of Little Pacuiao had far too much for Manuel Cappai, streaking to a 17?7 win and scoring almost half of his points in the final round where he toyed with the Italian teenager.
