WBO/IBF super bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire has explained why he got cramps in his title victory over IBF champion Jeffrey Mathebula at the Home Depot Center in Carson City last July 7.
Donaire told the Manila Standard that ?for a long time I hadn?t had any cramps or anything. The last time I had cramps was against Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez and that?s when I was cutting down a lot of weight to go down to 115 pounds.?
Donaire scored an 8th round TKO victory over Marquez to capture the WBA super flyweight Interim title on July 10, 2010 in Puerto Rico.
He said that in the Mathebula fight he ?felt good, felt great but going into the locker room they had me warm up at 7 o?clock because they said that by 7:30 I should be in the ring and they were not going to give me any more time. So from the beginning of the Kelly Pavlik fight I already warmed up. But the fight went the whole ten rounds and I was warming up for one whole hour. By the time I was done my legs were already tired because I was hopping around a lot.?
Donaire said ?it was like I fought ten rounds and then another twelve rounds and that?s why my legs suffered during the fight. It was also from very hot (in the dressing room) to the outside where it was very cold and my legs fell asleep.?
He added ?One thing for sure we?ll definitely figure out how to warm up properly. It should never be one hour, it should only be about 20 minutes warm-up.?
Donaire felt he was asked to warm-up early because they expected Pavlik to end his fight against Will Rosinsky which turned out to be a tough fight for Pavlik that went the distance.
