Former WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan has reacted calmly to a virulent blast by WBC champion Danny Garcia?s father and trainer Angel and the fighter himself against Khan, leading up to their July 15 (Manila Time) showdown at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, saying his fists will do the talking.
In an international conference call to promote the fight which will be telecast in the Philippines on ?Big Time Bakbakan? over AKTV IBC 13 AT 12:00 on Sunday, Khan said he is not the kind of individual who likes to get into arguments but added, ?In the end its only going to be me and him in the ring and I know exactly what I need to do in there.?
Boxing Scene?s editor Jake Donovan quoted Khan who said ?I?m not going to retaliate to Danny?s father or Danny himself. I?ve been in this situation so many times. I?m a professional fighter and I?m going to let my fists do the talking.?
Garcia (23-0, 14KOs) and his trainer/father picked up the rhetoric as the champion boldly predicted that he will hand Khan, the 2000 Athens Olympic silver medalist his second successive defeat after Khan lost a hugely controversial decision to Lamont Peterson who later tested positive for a banned substance as the two fighters were preparing for a rematch.
Garcia who hails from Philadelphia won the WBC title with a twelve round unanimous decision over veteran Mexican legend Erik ?El Terrible? Morales last March.
Taking a swipe at Khan, Garcia told The Boxing Lab, BoxingScene.com?s official audio show ? I think it's the perfect time for this fight. I'm the champion and he calls himself the best. If he calls himself the best then he has to beat the champion. To me, it's just another guy in my way trying to defeat me, but it ain't gonna happen"
Garcia noted "Everybody says he's fast and all that, but he reaches a lot with his punches and I think that's where he goes wrong. I'm a great counter-puncher, so if he comes in and he wants to reach - then he has to pay. If he wants to fight then we can fight. If he wants to box then we could box. Whatever he wants to do, I'm going to adapt in there and make a exciting fight and win."
Khan?s previous victories apparently don?t impress Garcia who claimed the British fighter was carefully matched against safe opponents in an effort to build up his reputation.
The WBC champion said "I know that I'm going to hurt him in this fight. He never fought anyone like me. All of his other fights were setup fights to make him look good. This fight right here, he is going to have his hands full."
Garcia?s father Angel continued his tirade against Khan and said he had told his son to inflict a bad beating on Khan. He claimed Khan never faced a Puerto Rican in his life and lashed out at the lack of respect for American fighters.
Trainer Garcia said ?Khan is a nobody. He is a fighter from Europe. Danny is an American fighter? in the process adding confusion to his previous statement that Khan never fought a Puerto Rican.
He referred to Timothy Bradley?s win over Manny Pacquiao which was condemned both in the US and around the world. He claimed Bradley was asked whether he really won against Pacquiao prompting Garcia to state ?Who the hell got the belt around his waist? He got the belt. Wjy are you going to question this man? Why? Because he?s an American fighter?
Adding insult to injury the trainer said in his life he never met a Pakistani who could fight.
