The president of the World Boxing Council Don Jose Sulaiman has promised to help in the effort to get a megabuck fight between ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao and undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr done.
On learning that Pacquiao wants a fight against Mayweather which the whole world has longed to see, the WBC president told the Manila Standard ?Take it for sure that I will do my best as this is the top fight the world wants to see.?
Sulaiman who has always been a supporter and admirer of Pacquiao whose first world title among the eight he has won was the WBC flyweight title which he captured with a sensational 8th round knockout of Thai hero Chatchai Sasakul on December 3, 1998 said that as president of the WBC, Mayweather ?respects the organization and is a friend. So are some of his representatives.?
At a dinner in Top Rank promoter Bob Arum?s home in Los Angeles prior to leaving on a visit to the Holy Land with wife Jinkee and their four children, Pacquiao and Arum discussed his future fights.
Arum told the Manila Standard ?Obviously the one fight that he (Pacquiao) wants is (Floyd) Mayweather. That?s the guy he wants to fight? but indicated he didn?t think there was enough time to do it this year primarily because Mayweather is serving out a prison term and, assuming they are able to reach an agreement, ?won?t be ready to fight until next year.?
Meantime, Pacquiao will consider three options put before him by Arum for a fight in Las Vegas this November.
They include a rematch with Timothy Bradley who took away Pacquiao?s WBO welterweight title in a split decision that was roundly condemned around the world and which a panel of five selected WBO judges ruled was terribly wrong after a review of the fight tape, with four of the five judges scoring it for Pacquiao by a wide margin.
Two of the unnamed judges had Pacquiao winning 118-110, two others had him ahead 117-111 and only one judge had it close in agreeing with the scorecard of fight judge CJ Roth at 115-113 also for Pacquiao.
The two other names on the list of possible opponents are Juan Manuel Marquez whose three previous fights with Pacquiao have been action-packed encounters marred by controversy and Miguel Cotto whom Pacquiao beat via a 12th round TKO to win the WBO title after dropping Cotto twice.
However, Cotto came back and battled Mayweather, losing only by a twelve round unanimous decision but putting on a solid performance.
