The fight between WBA world flyweight champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez (33-2, 25 KO?s)and Filipino Fernando Lumacad (26-3, 11 KO?s) is on again. But it won?t be for Marquez? title. Instead it is being billed as a super flyweight title eliminator.
Well known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis who had previously informed the Manila Standard that Lumacad was scheduled to face Marquez for his title on July 14 had to backtrack after the WBA sanctioned a title fight between Marquez and Interim title holder Carlos Reveco of Argentina.
The fight was going to a purse bid but that was called off by the WBA which officially stated that ?the Purse Bid summoned by the World Championships Committee of the World Boxing Association between the champions Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez and Juan Carlos Reveco has been canceled. It was scheduled for this Friday at the WBA headquarters in Panama and directed by Gilberto Mendoza, executive director.?
?Tyson? Marquez who is finding it difficult to make the flyweight limit is reportedly considering relinquishing his title. His weight problems were evident when he failed to make the 112 pound limit in his scheduled title defense against former world champion Rodel Mayol but somehow shed two pounds within a couple of minutes without even attempting to lose weight. In the resulting controversy Mayol refused to fight.
Marquez was instead forced to fight Richie Mepranum in a ten round non-title bout as a super flyweight, providing further proof of the champion?s problems making the flyweight limit.
The Marquez-Lumacad fight card is being staged by Zanfer Promotions of Fernando Beltran who handles Marquez. However, Beltran also disclosed they are negotiating a unification bout with WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria sometime in the last quarter of this year.
Marquez who is 23 years old has a record of 33-2 with 25 knockouts. He won the WBA flyweight title with an 11th round TKO over Luis Concepcion of Panama on April 2, 2011 and won by a 1st round knockout in a rematch in Mexico on October 29 that same year.
One of Lumacad?s more impressive wins since the Arce fiasco was unanimous eight round decision over Joseph Rios on November 12, 2011 in which Lumacad dropped Rios once in round 2 and then again in round 5 en route to a comfortable victory.
Lumacad has won his last 5 fights, 3 by knockout.
