Fernando Lumacad of the Philippines is scheduled to fight WBA flyweight champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez in a super flyweight eliminator in Mexico on July 14.
Australia?s well-known promoter Peter Maniatis who also co-manages Lumacad told the Manila nStandard ?we have just agreed to fight Marquez.?
Maniatis conceded ?this is a big test for Lumacad but I believe he has a good chance of pulling off an upset because he has traveled overseas before and is used to the pressure of stepping up for the big fights.?
Maniatis commended his partner Jim Mananquil who he said ?has done a tremendous job to get Lumacad back and firing? after his forgettable 3rd round knockout loss to Jorge ?Traviseo? Arce on June 27, 2009 at the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.
The Victorian promoter told us that Lumacad is currently training at the Sanman Gym in General Santos City and ?will be in terrific shape by July 14 when he plans to outbox Marquez.? He said Lumacad will travel with trainer Ranee and Dexter Tan who sponsors the Sanman gym.
Maniatis said Lumacad has been sparring with Pan Asian Boxing Association light flyweight champion Randy Petalcorin.
Marquez had trouble making the 115 pound weight limit in his last title defense against former world champion Rodel Mayop and was 2 pounds over the limit but suddenly stepped on the scales a minute or two later and unbelievably made the weight in controversial fashion.
The result was that Mayol refused to fight and Marquez took on last minute replacement Richie Mepranum who was scheduled to fight on the same card and won a ten round unanimous decision.
Mepranum had previously beaten Marquez handily in an eight round bout in Texas. The Mexican also lost by an 8th round TKO in a super flyweight clash with Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire in Puerto Rico.
Marquez who is 23 years old has a record of 33-2 with 25 knockouts. He won the WBA flyweight title with an 11th round TKO over Luis Concepcion of Panama on April 2, 2011 and won by a 1st round knockout in a rematch in Mexico on October 29 that same year.
One of Lumacad?s more impressive wins since the Arce fiasco was unanimous eight round decision over Joseph Rios on November 12, 2011 in which Lumacad dropped Rios once in round 2 and then again in round 5 en route to a comfortable victory.
Lumacad has won his last 5 fights, 3 by knockout and drawn one.
