Las Vegas, NV ? A night before Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley square off against each other, Top Rank Promotions puts up an eight bout card to start this week?s big boxing weekend in Sin City. The fights which were televised live over Sports cable giant ESPN drew a big crowd at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Resort.
PAVLIK MANGLES SIGMON.
The main event of the card was the return of former Middleweight King Kelly Pavlik. The 38-2 (33 KOs) native of Youngstown, OH, whose battle with alcoholism hindered his career, took on fellow American Scott Sigmon 22-3 (12 KOs) of Bedford, VA under a new team and coach. Pavlik dominated and bloodied the tough Sigmon en route to his first win in more than a year. The more accurate, stronger punching Pavlik busted his opponent?s nose as early as the 2nd round of the fight and pounded on it even more as the fight ensued. Sigmon also suffered a cut in yes left eye on the 6th that was caused by one of Pavlik?s headshots. That added more to the injury, turning not only his face but also his white shorts into a bloody mess.
Sigmon had no chance on winning but still fought valiantly even forcing the action at times. Referee Jay Nady would call a halt in the 7th round to have the ringside physicians checked on Sigmon?s nose and cut. He was allowed to finish the round only to take more punishment from Pavlik. The fight was halted in between the break between rounds 7 and 8 after Nady stopped the fight on advice of the doctors. This gave Pavlik his first win under Coach Roberto Garcia who took over as Pavlik?s new trainer this year.
It also opened a path for him to climb back to the pedestal that he once was at just at not too long ago. But it is clear that Pavlik and Garcia have plenty of work ahead of them. He gathered the 39th win of his career with the victory.
LEE REMAINS UNBEATEN
Mike Lee 8-0, (5 KOs) of Chicago, IL overcame a game Eliseo Durazo 3-2 of Agua Prieta, Mexico in a 6 round Light Heavyweight battle. Lee was the more accurate and better puncher of the two but Durazio did not bow easily from the Notre Dame alum turned pugilist. Lee went to the head for majority of the fight while the Mexican targeted his body in a tough 6 round bout. Durazo?s body attack was coupled with low blows which caught referee Russel Mora?s attention. Mora deducted a point off Durazio in the 4th after warning him in the previous round. But that would not be of importance as Lee dominated the fight and the judges? cards. All three judges scored the fight 59-54 in favor of Lee. He improved his unbeaten record to nine after the win.
MAGDALENO IMPRESSES
Unbeaten Jesse Magdaleno 9-0 (6 KOs) of Las Vegas produced a thrilling first round TKO win over Puerto Rican Carlos Valcarcel 12-4-4 (5 KOs) of Catano, PR. Magdaleno pounded on Valcarcel right from the opening bell, unleashing combinations on the Puerto Rican. A vicious left hook puts Valcarcel on the canvass to the cheers of his hometown fans. Valcarcel recovered but the younger brother of Super Featherweight Diego Magdaleno pounced on him after the pause in action. Referee Tony Weeks halted the fight after Valcarcel was unable to defend himself from the onslaught. The time of stoppage was 2:25 of the first and only round.
