Widely respected international referee Bruce McTavish who is also vice president of the Ring Officials Committee of the World Boxing Council is recovering well from surgery for a growth on his lip which was getting bigger and bothering him.
Doctors conducted a successful operation to remove the growth and comprehensive tests conducted showed the growth wasn?t malignant. The stitches will be removed tomorrow.
True to his calling McTavish told us a short while ago that he will officiate the crucial bout between the real Genaro ?Poblanito? Garcia against undefeated Genesis Servania at the Resorts World Hotel in Manila on Saturday in ?Pinoy Pride XIV.?
The fight card which is promoted by ALA Promotions in cooperation with the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN will be headlined by the WBO light flyweight title defense of Donnie Nietes against Mexican challenger Felipe Salguero.
Also on the card undefeated top flyweight contender Milan Melindo will battle former world champion Jesus Geles of Colombia.
McTavish who is married to the charming Carmen Tayag has lived in Angeles City for some 40 years and is a fixture in big fights in the Philippines and abroad.
When McTavish told his doctors he would officiate the Garcia-Servania fight on Saturday they said he was crazy. But McTavish, typical of him, insisted he would do the fight and they were not going to stop him.
Clearly his love for boxing and bringing a touch of international stature to a major promotion in the Philippines over-rides his concern for his personal health. That is reflective of the amazing Bruce McTavish.
