Featherweight Charly Suarez who is still battling for a possible wild card entry into the 2012 London Olympic Games has been beaten at the Sydney Jackson Memorial Tournament at the Universal Sports Complex in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Suarez, captain of the Philippine squad lost to Uzbekistan?s Faziddin Gaibnazarov who had already qualified for the London Olympics.

Suarez appeared to have connected with the more telling punches but the judges appeared not to give any credit for that but instead counted even powder-puff punches that gave Gaibnazarov a stunning 21-16 decision.

Two of the judges, Filipino Victorio Policarpio and another from Kazakhstan saw it for Suarez while the judges from Uzbekistan, Russia and Turkmenistan gave the decision to Gaibnazarov.

However, the Philippines lone Olympic qualifier Mark Anthony Barriga who turned 18 recently overcame a wayward elbow to the chest that caused an ugly welt to win 11-8 against Temitas Jusupov of Kazakhstan.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson reported that Barriga?s breathing was affected by the elbow to the chest in round two even as he suffered multiple scratches on his arms against his opponent who was at least three inches taller and towered over Barriga..

In contrast, 2011 AIBA World Junior Champion Eumir Felix Marcial appeared uncomfortable against the much shorter but shifty Shaboz Muhammadov of Uzbekistan and eked out a 14-13 decision.

The 16 year old Marcial won the first round 7-5 but the Uzbek frustrated the young Filipino in the second round to tie the score at 9-9 before Marcial went after his opponent in the third round to land his power punches to snatch the victory. He faces another Uzbek, Babur Aytbaev Wednesday.

Another 16 year old, Ian Clark Bautista, shrugged off jet lag as he came from behind a 3-4 deficit in the first round and smothered his opponent Ilhom Ivonov, still another Uzbek (they have 100 boxers in the tournament). Score was 14-9 in the second and finally 16-13 for the teenaged fighter from Binalbagan, Negros Occidental native who fights out of Himamaylan town.

ABAP executive director Ed Picson said "we thought Charly won it and it was a much closer fight than the score indicated. But Charly needs to make some adjustments. The new scoring system allows for points even for punches delivered with 60-70% force. Charly lands bombs and he staggered his opponent a couple of times. But they counted for only a point each. You need to throw more punches now."

"The good thing is, Suarez now realizes the nuances of the system and has vowed to work on the needed adjustment."

The team is coached by Ronald Chavez and Roel Velasco.
