Peterson.
Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer has told the Manila Standard that he had received a formal letter from Dr. Margaret Goodman, President of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association or VADA stating that WBA super lightweight Lamont Peterson had tested positive for the use of steroids.
The letter dated May 4, 2012 and received by Kizer on May 12 concerned the ?adverse analytical finding? for participant Lamont Peterson in the VADA program.
Dr. Goodman said the tests on Peterson who is scheduled for an upcoming bout (against former champion Amir Khan) showed ?results adverse, consistent with the administration of a steroid? and that per VADA policy the athlete has been removed from the program effective immediately.
The letter indicated VADA was reporting the test results to the Nevada State Athletic Commission as the Commission ?responsible for licensing the athlete?s upcoming bout.?
Peterson is scheduled to defend his WBA and IBF super welterweight titles at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on May 19.
Dr.Goodman said the urine specimen in question was collected on March 19, 2012 by a collections officer appointed by VADA . The specimen was transported by the collections officer to the WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) accredited UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory in Los Angeles, California.
All urine specimens collected for the VADA program are split into an ?A? and ?B? sample. The adverse results for the athlete?s ?A? sample was reported to VADA by the laboratory on April 12, 2012. VADA informed the athlete (Peterson) of the adverse analytical finding on April 13, 2012 and advised the athlete of his right to have the ?B? sample analyzed.
She said ?the process of analyzing the ?B? sample began at the laboratory on April 30, 2012 in the presence of one or more representatives of the athlete. The laboratory reported the results of the ?B? sample analysis to VADA on May 3, 2012.
The analytical results of the ?B? sample confirmed the analytical results of the ?A? sample.
VADA reported that the adverse analytical finding by the laboratory resulted from the analysis of the specimen by isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). This analytical method is also known as carbon isotope ratio (CIR). The IRMS/CIR results of the athlete?s specimen are consistent with the administration of an anabolic steroid such as testosterone.
VADA also informed Kizer that the IRMS/CIR results ?from a specimen collected from the same athlete on April 13, 2012 was negative on May 2, 2012.?
Dr. Goodman said VADA policy gives the athlete the option to request a telephonic hearing in order to appeal VADA?s finding of a doping violation. At this hearing the athlete will be afforded an opportunity to present all evidence and arguments in support of his appeal if he chooses to do so.
At the same time Dr. Goodman said VADA ?appreciates NSAC?s commitment to clean sport and is available to answer any questions or to provide any additional documentation about the matter discussed in this letter.?
The Nevada State Athletic Commission is expected to decide on whether the fight is on or off after they hear Team Peterson?s explanation.
