Premature stoppage halted Jonathan Taconing's gritty effort in Thailand

Jonathan Taconing's heroic and brave effort against WBC light flyweight champion, Kompayak Pompramook was cut short by a controversial stoppage after the 5th round in a fight held at the Provincial Hall in the province of Buriram, Thailand. The 13-1-1 ( 10 KOs ) boxer from Paranaque held his own against the Thai champion in an exciting battle for the WBC light flyweight belt. Taconing never backed down from the champion's attack and responded with an assault of his own.
Taconing launched his own offensive connecting with uppercuts and left hooks on the champ who had to cover up to defend it. The two figured in an exciting exchange in the 3rd round which drew big reaction from the crowd. Taconing started strong and aggressive in the 4th round unloading multiple combinations on Pompranook who has an impressive record of 44-3 ( 30 KOs). But the action was immediately halted by referee Jae Bong Kim after Pompranook suffered a cut from an accidental banging of heads in the round. The fight continued after the Thai champion received care for the said injury and the action in the ring resumed for the two brave fighters. Both fighters finished the 4th round figuring in another heated exchange with Taconing landing head shots as the round ended.
The Filipino challenger had the champion in trouble in the early part of the 5th after trapping him in a corner. He unloaded hard shots to the head of the champion forcing the Thai to clinch to protect himself from the onslaught. Taconing again forced him to a corner and the ropes after the break as the champ desperately tried to fight back. Pompramook was being bombarded heavily by the Filipino in the ropes until the action was suspiciously halted by referee Kim. Taconing was deducted a point by the referee as the Filipino was in the middle of his assault on the defending champion.
But the deduction did not stop Taconing as he continued his spirited effort against the champ landing additional hard punches on Pompramook. The defending champ fought back producing a very exciting round in the fight. The fight was ultimately stopped after the 5th round due to the cut on the left eye of the hometown fighter. The stoppage produced an unfavorable reaction from the crowd who were eager for more action in the ring. Pompramook retained his WBC light flyweight belt with a Technical Decision victory as the fight went to the score cards after the stoppage. Mongolian judge, Zanashir Taznaa had the fight even at 47 a piece, judge Geoff Bolton from New Zealand had it 48-46 for Pompramook and Japanese judge Takeaki Kanaya had it a shut out for the champion at 50-45.
Taconing was upset that the fight was stopped prematurely when this writer chatted with him after the fight. He insisted that the cut on the Thai was from a punch and not a butt. He assured me that he is fine and is free of any injury and that he will be flying back to Manila today ( Friday ) from Thailand. He expressed gratitude to those that have supported him in this fight. " Salamat po sa pagtitiwala at suporta.' ( Thank you for the trust and support.) he said.
Taconing showed grit and determination in his fight against a heavy favorite of 47 fights. He performed well despite the big disparity of their records and despite his obvious lack of experience in the ring. The underdog showed the fighting heart of a brave Filipino warrior and was being successful in his efforts of challenging the reigning champion. It was unfortunate that his brave attempt to do so had to end on a questionable stoppage of the fight. But, rest assured it won't be the last time you will be hearing of the boxer nicknamed " Lightning."
