WBC international light flyweight champion Jonathan Taconing (13-1-1, 10KO's) gets a shot at the world title held by Thailand?s WBC champion Kompayak Porpramook (44-3, 30KO's) in a bout that Taconing?s manager Johnny Elorde told the Manila Standard will take place in a venue which is a four-hour drive from Bangkok on May 5.
The 25 year old southpaw nicknamed ?Lightning? has a record of 13-1-1 with 10 knockouts while Porpramook is a 29 year old veteran with a record of 44-3 with 30 knockouts.
Porpramook won the title with a 10th round knockout of Mexico?s Adrian Hernandez on December 23, 2011. He had previously scored a six round unanimous decision over Filipino Michael Rodriguez on April 29, 2011.
In a post fight interview with boxingscene.com Hernandez said "Porpramook was much better than I expected. I wax surprised by his punching power and speed."
Elorde said Taconing has been sparring against a variety of opponents at the Elorde Gym in Sucat, Paranaque and looked good.
He said they had reviewed tapes of Porpramook and believed ?there is hope for us to win the world title? even though the Thai champion who stands just a shade over 5 feet which would give Taconing a two inch height advantage is known as an aggressive fighter with power.
Knowing how difficult it is to win a decision in Thailand, Taconing has indicated he would try to go for a knockout if he sees an opening.
Taconing is coming off a dominating performance against Jonathan ?Kumander Apo? Apuya who called it quits at the end of the fourth round last March 25 in a fight card at the 12th ?Flash? Elorde Annual ?Banquet of Champions.?
Taconing displayed quick hands, excellent movement and solid punching power to overwhelm Apuya who was well over the limit and was forced to wear ten ounce gloves.
The world title contender launched a two-fisted attack right from the opening bell but found it hard to hurt the much bigger and heavier Apuya. However, he eventually broke him down and forced Apuya to quit.
It was Taconing?s fifth stoppage in his last six fights after winning the WBC Intercontinental interim title with a 6th round TKO over Warlito Parrenas Jr after dropping him twice . Parrenas fought under the ring name Wars Katsumata.
Taconing clinched full title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Ngaoprachan Chuwatana of Thailand last October 17, 2011.
