Marlon ?Marex? Alta?s shot at the WBC Youth Intercontinental middleweight title against New Zealand--based Samoan Afakasi Pele Faumuina has been approved by Rex Walker who heads the Youth Championships committee of the World Boxing Council.
Alta?s promoter, Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde told the Manila Standard that the title fight will take place at the Flash Grand Ballroom of the Elorde Sports Complex along Sucat Road in Paranaque on May 12.
The 21 year old Alta has a record of 11-2 with 8 knockouts while Faumuina who is the No.1 ranked WBC Intercontinental contender is 23 years old and has a record of 8-1 with 1 knockout.
Alta won the Philippines vacant title with a 12th round TKO over Benedict Fontines on June 18, 2011 and successfully defended the title with a twelve round unanimous decision over veteran Dondon Lapuz on September 17, 2011.
Elorde said Alta is young, stands 5?10? in height and is a good fighter who can take a punch.
The only Filipino middleweight who became a world champion was Ceferino Garcia who won the world title with a 7th round TKO in a scheduled fifteen round bout against Fred Apostoli at New York?s famed Madison Square Gardem on October 2, 1939.
Referee Billy Cavanaugh stopped the fight at 2:07 of the 7th round after Garcia dropped Apostoli three times.
