Los Angeles - Rodel Mayol will leave this weekend for the Philippines to join Manny Pacquiao's camp in Baguio City and to train for a possible fight in June, perhaps against Hernan "Tyson" Marquez. Mayol was supposed to fight Marquez for his WBA flyweight title last March 24 in Mexico but withdrew out of protest against alleged tampering in the scales by Marquez's team during the weigh-in the day before the fight.

Marquez ended up facing Richie Mepranum, another Filipino pugilist in a 10 round bout which the Mexican won by unanimous decision. His flyweight belt was not at stake for that fight. A disappointed Mayol and his team went back to Los Angeles, Ca. where he resides without receiving a single penny for months of hard work that he invested training for the said fight. He was even threatened to be banned from the sport owing to his actions last month. But Mayol was unfazed and firmly believed that he and his team did the right thing in not fighting Marquez. It was a decision that was firmly supported by no less than his promoter and pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao.

"Aalis ako sa Saturday kasi sasama ako sa training ni MP." (I will be leaving Saturday to join MP's training camp.) an excited Mayol told me over the phone today. He will be joined by his trainer Nonoy Neri and the rest of his team as they prepare for a fight in June in Las Vegas in either the Pacquiao - Tim Bradley undercard or on a separate event the day before. Mayol verbalized that Pacquiao promised him a slot in one of the two cards when he spoke to him last.

Mayol also stated that MP Promotions through Michael Koncz is negotiating with the camp of Marquez for him to face the Mexican in June. "Sa ngayon wala pang final decision at under negotiations pa (There is still no final decision as it is still under negotiations)," expressed Mayol. "Sabi ni Manny na mag-training ka na lang para kahit sino ang makalaban mo ay handa ka." ( Manny advised me to start training so that I will be ready against anybody that I might be facing.) he added.

Koncz told Mayol that he has been in talks with Zanfer Promotions who handles Marquez about rescheduling their cancelled fight. Mayol was supposed to hear from Koncz tonight (April 11th) but Koncz left for the Philippines before he had a chance to call him.

Mayol hopes that the fight with Marquez pushes through and expressed satisfaction that it will take place in a neutral territory. "Mas maganda dito gawin yung laban sa America para fair grounds." ( It's better that the fight be held here in America so that it's fair grounds.) "Mas gusto ko dito, kasi yung mga commission dito walang kinakampihan." ( I prefer it here because the commissions here does not favor anybody.)

Mayol cannot wait to restart his formal training. He has been doing light conditioning at the Wild Card Gym in L.A. just days after returning from Mexico. He expressed excitement about this recent developments. "Syempre excited ako. Madami tayong kababayan at fans dito, lalo na sa Vegas kaya pagbubutihin ko iyong ensayo ko. Para pag natuloy ito, maganda iyong ipapakita ko sa mga fans dito sa Las Vegas." (I am very excited. We have a large number of our countrymen and fans in Vegas and I will definitely train hard for them. So that if this fight comes, I will be able to put up a good showing for them.)
