Undefeated Mercito ?No Mercy? Gesta who takes on Colombia?s Oscar Cuero at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino on April 14 will be ?aggressive and sharp? in a fight that is expected to be a stepping stone to a world title fight later this year..
Gesta?s trainer and co-manager Vince Parra told the Manila Standard that they wrapped up ?a long training camp which was a little over eight weeks and the presence of Mercito?s father, Anecito, was a great addition to the team in helping in Mercito?s conditioning and in motivating him.?
Parra said the 24 year old southpaw with a record of 24-0-1 with 12 knockouts is ?right on track. He looks good and I expect a lot of action. I expect a very, very aggressive and sharp Mercito Gesta.?
He said Gesta?s primary sparring partners were featherweight Aaron Garcia (10-3-2, 2 KO?s) and ?two really great junior welterweight prospects Adrian Vargas (5-0-1, 3 KO?s) and Emilio Bojorquez (19-1, 13 KO?s) of Mexico.
Garcia is the same fighter who dropped a ten round split decision to Bernabe Concepcion on October 27, 2011 after suffering a cut on his left eye due to an accidental clash of heads.
Parra said he was ?looking forward to a good HBO debut and with the fight being broadcast to the Philippines, Mercito is excited about that and even though we didn?t get the big name opponent that we might have wanted, we are looking at this as a great opportunity because we have a tough opponent even though his record isn?t that great.?
Gesta?s trainer said Cuero ?had over 300 amateur fights and is a very experienced opponent so we expect to put together a great performance leading up to a big fight in December.?
The 26 year old Colombian has a record of 15-7 with 12 knockouts which indicate Cuero can punch. He won his last two fights by knockouts against Alex Barrios over whom he scored a 2nd round KO on March 7 this year and a 4th round KO over Luis Hernan Rodriguez last March 24.
One of Cuero's losses was an eight round decision to Emmanuel Lucero whop once fought Manny Pacquiao for the IBF super bantamweight title.
Gesta is coming off a ten round unanimous decision over two-time world title challenger Ricardo Dominguez whom he dropped in the bthird round en route to a comfortable win.
Dominguez went the 12 round distance in a WBC title fight against Humberto Soto on May 15, 2010 and an IBF title fight against Miguel Vazquez on November 27, 2010.
