Both Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol (30-5-2, 22 KO?s) and Mexico?s WBA world flyweight champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez (32-2, 25 KO?s) have predicted a knockout victory when they clash in Sonora, Mexico on Sunday, Manila Time.
At a crowded pre-fight press conference Marquez conceded that Mayol is a tough opponent but took a dig at the fromer WBC light flyweight champion when he said Mayol ?is very experienced and he is also dangerous with his fists and his head? besides having faced quality opponents.
Marquez told boxingscene.com he is coming into his third title defense with the ?best preparation of my career. I trained like crazy for this fight. I must be careful about some things but I will show why I am the champion, why I take very tough fights, so I don?t think the fight will reach the 12th round.?
Marquez? mention of Mayol?s use of his head was in reference to the controversy that surrounded his 2nd round TKO victory over then WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa who was groggy after a solid head-butt by Mayol on his left cheek in the second round and got caught on the ropes at the start of the second with a flurry of punches forcing the referee to call a halt and declare Mayol the winner by TKO.
However, a medical examination after the fight showed Solis had a fractured left cheekbone caused by the head-butt which sidelined him for six months.
Mayol?s two fights against Omar Nino Romero were also marred by head-butts. Their first encounter resulted in a 3rd round technical draw on February 27, 2010 while in the title rematch Mayol lost a twelve round unanimous decision after being deducted one point in round two and another in round five for head-butts opened up a cut over Omar Nino Romero?s eye which bled and resulted in the point deductions under WBC rules.
Both Tyson Marquez and his trainer referred to cuts caused by Mayol?s head-butts in previous fights and indicated they will ask the referee and the WBA supervisor to keep an eye on the situation.
Despite fears of head-butts Marquez was confident of the result. He made it clear that ?if he (Mayol) wants to come for my belt, I?ll be waiting to pounce and finish the fight early but if not we?ll look to win round by round and leave no doubt? as to the winner.
Mayol showed no visible sign of being upset over the reference to head-butts merely indicating that he has trained hard for this title shot and is ready to win, possibly by a knockout.
However, Manny Pacquiao?s adviser who handles the fighters under MP Promotions tried to downplay the issue by stating ?it?s a matter of style. They fight that way going straight ahead and looking to get past the guard of their opponents.?
Also seeing action on the undercard is bantamweight Richie Mepranum, the 24 year old southpaw who scored a lopsided ten round decision over Marquez on March 12, 2010 at the Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine, Texas.
The Filipino southpaw who has a record of 25-2-1 with 5 knockouts takes on Juan Francisco Estrada who has an impressive record of 20-1 with 16 knockouts. The soft-spoken Mepranum said he would do what needs to be done to win.
