Undefeated Mikey Garcia who is ranked by all the major world boxing organizations successfully defended his North American Boxing Federation and North American Boxing Organization featherweight titles with an 7th round TKO over former two-time world title challenger Bernabe Concepcion at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Sanb Juan, Puerto Rico.
Garcia who is ranked No.1 by the WBA, No. 2 by the WBC and WBO and No. 8 by the IBF put on an impressive performance against the Filipino and earned a possible crack at the winner of the WBO featherweight title fight between Oscar Salido and Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez.
Garcia had said he expected a tough fight against Concepcion but it wasn?t as tough as he had expected.
The younger brother of trainer Robert Garcia who handles WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire controlled the tempo of the ten round bout and gradually asserted his superiority before dropping Concepcion in the seventh round with a solid combination.
Garcia followed up with a barrage of punches forcing the referee to call a halt. The official time was 2:33.
Garcia improved to 28-0 with 24 knockouts while Concepcion fell to 31-5-1 with 17 knockouts.
Earlier, another Filipino, former super featherweight champion Allan Tanada lost a lopsided eight round decision to Puerto Rico?s Gamalier Rodriguez who staggered Tanada in the fifth round and went on to win handily.
Two judges gave Tanada only one round in a 79-73 scorecard while the third judge scored it a shutout for the Puerto Rican.
