Randy Petalcorin.
Talented 20 year old Randy ?Razor? Petalcorin will defend his Pan Asia Boxing Association light flyweight title against Thailand?s Samartlek Chaiyonggym (Sithsaithong) on April 28 possibly at the Mandaluyong City Gymnasium where pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao first made a name for himself.
The fight card which will include a Philippine championship bout will be telecast ?live? by AKTV IBC 13.
Petalcorin who is handled by well-known Australian promoter and TV boxing host Peter Maniatis is ranked No. 8 in the world by the World Boxing Association and has a record of 16-1 with 13 knockouts. Maniatis informed the Manila Standard that the title defense had been ?approved and sanctioned? by PABA Director General Alan Kim.
Maniatis said ?I am sure this will be a good test for Randy as Samartlek has wins over former woprld champion Muhammad Rachman and tough Sammy Hagler.?
The 27 year old Samartlek has a fight record of 8-3 with 3 knockouts.
As Maniatis mentioned the Thai is coming off a win over fancied Indonesian slugger Sammy Hagler, a veteran of 23 fights, last February 15.
Samartkek also has an impressive win over former IBF minimum weight champion Muhammad Rachman on January 24 last year. He even battled hard-hitting world title contender Denver Cuello for eight rounds before the referee called a halt in the 9th in a WBC International minimum weight title fight on March 25, 2011.
After winning his next two fights by TKO, Samartek scored a unanimous decision over Eric Diaz Siregar, a veteran of 32 fights in a solid performance on August 19, 2011.
Petalcorin, a southpaw is nicknamed ?Razor? which is a reflection of his sharp skills and ability to punch.
He is being trained by American Rick Stahaley at his World Class Boxing Gym in Angeles City.
Stahaley who trained Pacquiao before he won the WBC flyweight title with a stunning 8th round knockout of Thai hero Chatchai Sasakul in December 1998 told the Manila Standard that said Petalcorin sparred four rounds on Thursday with flyweight Fernando Lumacad and a fighter from Hong Kong named Rex Tso and looked good.
Stahaley said ?I really like Randy. He?s got good speed and nice footwork? but he needs to learn to put his combinations together.
Petalcorin won the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation flyweight title with a 2nd round knockout of Allan Doronilla dropping him in rounds one and two on December 4, 2010.
He won the vacant WBC Asia Council Continental light flyweight title with a 1st round knockout of Yodchingchai Sithkonnapha on June 11, 2011 before capturing the PABA title when Michael Rodriguez was disqualified in the 8th round by referee Silvestre Abainza after being dropped in the previous round on August 6, 2011.
In his last fight Petalcorin scored a 2nd round knockout over Jherad Tuyor whom he dropped twice in the opening round.
