Al Sabaupan.
Undefeated southpaw Al "Captain A"Sabaupan has earned an IBF lightweight title eliminator against Mexico's Marvin "Cachorro" Quintero in a battle of southpaws to be held in Manila on April 15.
The hard-hitting Sabaupan?s manager, Elmer Anuran told the Manila Standard that the purse bid set for Wednesday had been called off as both well-known Mexican promoters Zanfer who negotiated on behalf of Sabaupan and Quintero's promoter came to terms.
The 23 year old Filipino who has a record of 18-0-1 with 13 knockouts has been training in Baguio City just in case the title eliminator would be held in Mexico where the high altitude could make a difference.
Anuran said that since the fight is most likely to be held at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig in a tie-up with Solar Sports, he brought Sabaupan to Batangas City where he continues to train hard under Benny De La Pena.
He said they are now focused on ?adjusting his footwork and his defense? even as he described Quintero as a ?good fighter who tends to fade in the later rounds.?
The manager revealed that the original plan was to put the Sabaupan-Quintero title eliminator on the undercard of WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria?s defense against arch rival Omar Nino Romero but that fight has been sealed for April 1 also at the Ynares Center and cannot be moved.
The 25 year old Quintero has a record of 24-3 with 20 knockouts. He has strung together four wins by TKO since suffering a 2nd round knockout against Ghana?s Daniel Attach on November 6, 2010.
A report on the fight by boxingscene.com said ?the rugged veteran Attah crept back into contender status when he shocked the careless Mexican (Quintero) with a vicious left hook combination to the head. Quintero was the favorite heading into the fight but fell into the trap set up by the crafty Attah.?
The report noted that Quintero ?seemed to have no respect for Attah?s punching power as he kept coming forward with his hands held low. Attah timed him perfectly and landed the left-right combination that sent his opponent to the floor, Referee Jay Nady reached the 10 count at the 1:55 mark of the second round ending the fight.?
In his last fight on November 26, 2011, Quintero won by a 3rd round TKO over Virgilio Enrique Ramirez while Sabaupan is coming off a win over Jonel Gadapan who retired in the 4th round in an IBF Pan Pacific lightweight title defense.
Sabuapan won the vacant IBF Pan Pacific title with a 3rd round TKO of Indonesia?s Heri Andriyanto on April 17, 2010.
