Charly Suarez.
Multi-titled amateur boxer Charly Suarez scored a major upset last night (Friday) in the World Series of Boxing quarterfinals by scoring a 3-0 shutout victory over World No. 4 ranked favorite Semen Gribachev of Azerbaijan.
The 23 year old Suarez was recruited by the Mumbai Fighters team of India which is one of twelve international franchises in the inaugural tournament of the league organized by the International Amateur Boxing Association or AIBA headed by Dr. Wu of Chinese-Taipei.
The Mumbai Fighters franchise is owned by TransStadia Boxing India Pvt. Ltd.
The unique format returns to a previous era when amateur boxers fought without head-guards and vests which were an integral part of Olympic-styc-style boxing.
In a move that is similar to professional boxing the fights in the WSB are scored by three judges and involve five rounds instead of three.
Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson said "The Davaoeno power-puncher surprised the feisty Azeri with lightning quick jabs and precise combinations that obviously hurt his foe so that the hometown crowd in Mumbai thought the fight was practically over after three rounds."
However, Picson reported that the 27 year-old Azeri veteran however, "tried to come back in the last round, but Suarez was already sitting on a comfortable lead as the animated crowd chanted the Filipino?s name lustily."
Suarez?s win helped propel the Mumbai Fighters team to a hard-fought 3-2 win over the previously unbeaten Baku Fires. It also improved the Indian team?s standing in Group A.
Picson said Nitin Beri, vice-president of the Mumbai Fighters, excitedly relayed the good news of Suarez?s victory via an overseas call past midnight Manila time, Friday.
In his first fight in the WSB tournament Suarez floored rival Egkachai Prommaka with a right hook to the jaw to score a 2nd round knockout as the Mumbai Fighters won their eighth round home match 4-1 against Bangkok Elephants.
Suarez, described as "swift and deadly in the ring stung his southpaw rival in the first round and swung into action in the second."
Beri enthusiastically informed Picson that he was already drafting a fresh contract for Charly?s inclusion in the Mumbai Fighters? line-up next year.
The good news came on the eve of a big night for the ABAP, the national sports association for boxing, which will receive major accolades in the Annual Awards of the prestigious Philippine Sportswriters Association at the Manila Hotel.
The ABAP is being honored with the award for the NSA of the Year alongside the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philipines with the coveted Executive of the Year award going to ABAP president Ricky Vargas and the Tony Siddayao Award for Eumir Marcial who won the World Junior BoxingChampionships in August last year.
Vargas said this is ?icing on the cake for ABAP. We are always reminded by our chairman Manny V. Pangilinan that we can only do great things if we have a plan and a program to execute it. Charly and the rest of our boxers are reaping the rewards of being under that program. We foresee better things ahead for our team.?
Suarez will vie for the lone Olympic slot available for Asia in the lightweight 60 Kg weight category in the Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan April 4-13.
