The smaller and shorter British heavyweight challenger Dereck Chisora made a fight of it against the giant Ukraine WBC champion Vitali Klitschko in the ring and engaged former world champion and fellow Brit David Haye outside the ring in a press conference melee.
When the fight ended Chisora who was booed by some 12,000 fans in Munich, Germany left the ring with his head held high after taking the champion the full twelve rounds which is something few fighters have done in recent years.
Chisora who faces a hefty fine from the WBC for slapping Klitschko during the official weigh-in and spiced up the pre-fight by spitting water into the face of Klitschko?s brother and WBA/IBF champion Wladirmir fought bravely in the fight telecast by AKTV IBC 13.
WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman told the Manila Standard that Chisora?s action was ?a blast to the expected fair play in sports and it cannot be condoned. It is time that strong measures are taken to bring respect, fair play and discipline in the sport of boxing.?
Chisora didn?t back off against the champion, often coming forward and trying desperately to get a big shot in . Klitschko was too big and too smart and tagged the Briton with his left jab and some vicious right hands but couldn?t put him down.
Reacting to the boos, Chisora told Sun Sports "I don't mind people booing me. They can boo me, they can hate me, I don't really care. As long as they pay money to come and watch the sport I love, I don't care.?
He said lack of experience hurt him and although he asked for a rematch or a fight with Wladirmir the lopsided scorecards appear to have ruled out a rematch although there were many who felt the scorecards didn?t do justice to Chisora?s effort.
Frenchh judge Robin Dolpierre and Ghana?s Eddie Pappoe had Klitschko winning 118-110 while Hungary?s Bela Florian scored it for Klitschko 119-111.
In a post-fight interview Chisora said "I'm going to keep working hard. I came here to fight and that's what I did. I wasn't just here for the money."Former champion David Haye?s manager Adam Booth suffered facial cuts after being caught up in a brawl between Haye who was doing the TV commentary and Chisora.
Ben Dirs of BBC Sport reported that after some verbal exchanges between Chisora, Haye and Wladimir Klitschko ?Chisora left his seat and approached Haye and there followed a five-minute melee akin to a bar room brawl from which emerged a bloodied Chisora, a bloodied Booth and wild accusations from all camps.?
