Early part of next month is a fight fan's dream as two of the biggest local boxing events so far this year unfolds in this beautiful tourism enclave of Bohol.
It starts with professional boxing as ALA Promotions stages the 12th installment of the highly successful Pinoy Pride series, "Bakbakan sa Bohol" featuring local favorite and world-ranked Rey "Boom-Boom" Bautista of Candijay, on March 3. He will be matched against a tough Mexican in Genaro "Poblanito" Garcia, who owns a victory over future Hall of Famer Rafael Marquez.
Also set to compete is undefeated up-and-comer Genesis "Azukal" Servania and Jason Pagara. Another intriguing bout of interest is between veterans Michael Domingo and Marvin Tampus. Newbies Joren Labordo, Jordan Catubay, Rey Morales and Mark Acub are also scheduled to show off their potential.
Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex in Tagbilaran City will be the venue of this huge boxing card to be broadcast by ABS-CBN Sports.
The next day, March 4 will be the opening of the premier amateur boxing tournament in the country as PLDT-ABAP National Championships commences. The very best amateur pugs in the country converge in this anticipated slugfest after surviving the zone eliminations in Mandaluyong City Gym for NCR-Luzon, Panabo City for Mindanao late last year and Dumaguete City for Visayas early this year. Many are eager to show their talent as scouts from ABAP are closely monitoring the event for potential recruits to the national team and represent the country in tournaments abroad.
This edition of the National Championships could be a unique one as organizers are planning to stage the tournament in different municipalities near Tagbilaran City with the opening day to be hosted by the capital city. And this could bring in tourists who consider sports, especially boxing as a weekend vacation alternative.
