American Rafael Ramos from San Antonio, Texas has been chosen to referee the battale for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title between WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire and former champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr of Puerto Rico.
The WBO Asia Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo informed the Manila Standard that President Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel had also appointed Levi Martinez, Ruben Garcia and D onald Trella as judges and Luis Perez as WBO supervisor for the title fight.
The fight takes place at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas on February 5, Manila Time and will be telecast by ABS-CBN.
Ramos has refereed several world title fight including championship bouts in Japan, Thailand, Korea and Indonesia as well as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, Ecuador, Germany, Italy and France.
The well-traveled referee has worked bouts for the major boxing organizations such as the WBO, WBC, IBF and WBA.
He refereed his first fight on January 12, 1990. It was an eight round bout in which Michael Carbajal beat Miguel Banda by a unanimous decision at the Trump Plaza Hotel in Atlantic City.
Ramos was chosen to referee the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey WBO welterweight title fight at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in November 2010 although the WBO had requested controversial referee Laurence Cole, the son of Texas Commission administrator Dick Cole as the third man in the ring.
However, the Texas Commission turned down the request and named Ramos as referee.
At that time well known boxing writer Ricardo Lois recalled that Ramos refereed the 2009 ?Fight of the Year? between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz and that ?his performance was excellent.?
Lois noted that Ramos gave ?both men the opportunity to fight, without much interference and gave Diaz a chance to fight a little loinger before ultimately being stopped.?
