The International Boxing Federation said yesterday it is ?very disappointed? that the scheduled January 18 hearing into the appeal filed by former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan was called off after Khan withdrew his appeal to the IBF.
Khan had asked the IBF to overturn the split decision result by which he lost his title to Lamont Peterson or order an immediate rematch.
IBF Chairman of the Ratings Committee Lindsey Tucker told The Manila Standard that the organization received a call from Golden Boy Promotion?s lawyers at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday calling off the appeal hearing.
Expressing the disappointment of the IBF at the decision to withdraw, Tucker said ?We felt this was an opportunity for all parties to be heard. In fact we had the IBF Supervisor, Paul Artisst here to answer any questions. He came here from Washington, D.C. Also, we had Mr. Mustafa Ameen (the man in the Blue Hat) here to answer any questions. He flew in yesterday from Los Angeles, California.?
Tucker added ?We made it clear that anyone connected to the Khan vs. Peterson could attend the Appeal hearing and be heard. Unfortunately we were not allowed to let both sides present their case and have an impartial panel decide on the facts presented.?
Golden Boy had alleged there were discrepancies in the scoring of the judges and that referee Joe Cooper who deducted two crucial points from Khan for shoving Peterson was guilty of ?home cooking? since he is from Virginia.
Khan had arrived in New Jersey for the appeal hearing when it was cancelled after Khan?s handlers led by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer reportedly told IBF president Daryl Peoples that ?if he was going to have certain people there, and others not, then that does not sound to me as if there was a fully transparent meeting. It would have been a one-sided hearing where not all of the parties would have been there to tell the story."
The WBA had earlier ordered a rematch which Schaefer said would take place within 180 days and that Khan had offered Peterson a fifty-fifty split just in order to get back in the ring with the man who took the title away from him in what Khan charged were anomalous circumstances.
The so-called ?Mystery Man? Mustafa Ameen responding to video footage that showed him at ringside distracting judges and leaning across bout supervisor Michael Welsh told BBC Sport he was merely correcting mistakes made by Welsh on the scorecard. Ameen said ?I noticed one error and a subsequent error. I assisted him in correcting it without touching anything."
Meantime. Peterson?s handlers are asking the WBA to reverse its decision ordering a rematch and have submitted what they claim is a ?comprehensive written appeal to the WBA " and expressed confidence that " the WBA will overturn its decision mandating an immediate rematch and recognize Lamont Peterson as the true and final WBA junior welterweight champion? even as they denied there were ?open negotiations? for a rematch.
The British newspaper The Sun reported that Khan will never fight for the IBF title again. It said Khan slammed the IBF on twitter stating ?It aint fair they are all in it together , never will fight for the IBF again. The WBA want an immediate rematch so I?ll stick with that.?
