FIGHT FANS CAN SIZE UP ?CANELO? ALVAREZ ON ?BIGTIME BAKBAKAN?

Just how good is Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez, the undefeated World Boxing Council light middleweight champion who has called out Floyd Mayweather Jr to face him on May 5?
Filipino fight fans will have an opportunity to size up the 22 year old Mexican prospect who some boxing aficionados believe is more hype than substance when the highly-rated weekly boxing show ?Bigtime Bakbakan? over AKTV IBC 13 features Alvarez in his title defense against former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron.
Although Alvarez has been mentioned as a possible opponent of Mayweather, World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman told the Manila Standard ?I don?t believe that ?Canelo? will beat Mayweather because that is foolish because Mayweather is a great fight and has never lost.?
However, Sulaiman said ?I believe there are very few fighters who could give Mayweather the kind of fight that ?Canelo? can.?
Mexicans continue to look for someone to step up and replace the likes of such legends as Marco Antonio arrera, Erik ?El Terrible? Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez who are in the twilight of their careers and they see in Alvarez a real promising prospect.
Alvarez 39-0-1 with 29 knockouts is the youngest reigning world champion and his battle with former welterweight champion, Puerto Rico?s Kermit Cintron who has a record of 33-5-1 with 28 knockouts provided a glimpse of the power of the most popular fighter in Mexico today.
Against Cintron, Alvarez showed his new-found maturity by not rushing things and sizing up his opponent in the early rounds before launching some big body shots that had Cintron in trouble in the fourth round when he was dropped before being saved by the bell.
Early in the fifth round Cintron turned the tide and caught Alvarez with some good combinations but the world champion nailed Cintron with several powerful right hands that saw referee Hector Afu call a halt at 2:53 of the round although there were some ringside observers who felt the stoppage was a little premature.
Here again, Filipino boxing fans can make their own judgment.
The stats told the story. Alvarez landed a total of 79 punches compared to the 41 by Cintron while the Mexican youngster had a huge advantage in power shots ? 62 to 19.
?Bigtime Bakbakan? which is telecast at 12:noon will be preceded by another top rated boxing show ?The Main Event? at 11:00 a.m. This week's show which will look at the March 10 WBO Interim featherweight title fight between Philippine champion Michael Farenas (33-3-3, 26 KO?s) the southpaw prot?g? of former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa and undefeated WBO NABO and NABF champion Miguel Angel ?Mikey? Garcia who has a record of 27-0 with 23 knockouts.
Garcia is the brother of former world champion Robert Garcia, 2011 Sports Illustrated ?Trainer of the Year? and Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire?s trainer.
