Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) begins the new year on right track and commences the staging of 2012 PLDT-ABAP Visayas Championships on Jan. 24 to 30 in Robinson's Place Dumaguete City. This is a grass roots initiative of the governing body in amateur boxing of the country to discover potential talents who can represent the country in international competitions.

Mindanao leg of the said event was held last December in Panabo City, Davao del Sur with host city as over-all champions. This time, pugs from different areas in the Visayas get a chance to prove their worth as they compete in the premier amateur boxing slugfest in the country with the National Championships to be held in Tagbilaran City in February.

October 2010 was the last staging of the Visayas Championships and was dominated by host Mandaue City with former amateur standout and now pro up-and-comer Albert Pagara leading the charge. Cagayan de Oro City, Misamas Oriental National Championships last year prove to be a gold mine haul for ABAP as recruits to the national team include 2011 AIBA World Junior Boxing champion Eumir Felix Marcial of Zamboanga City. ABAP has high hopes for another encore, as our dream of capturing that elusive first Olympic gold medal starts anew this coming July-August in London, England.
