Eager to get rid of his ring rust after a 20 month layoff, former WBO super flyweight champion ?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona will battle lanky Carlos ?Skinny? Fulgencio of the Dominican Republic at the air-conditioned Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City on February 4.

It will be Sonsona?s second fight in a determined effort to prove that his wild and wooly ways which saw him suffer a 4th round knockout at the hands of Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in a clash for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title was a mere bump on the road to a second d world title.

Despite his long layoff, a fully committed Sonsona came back with an impressive ten round unanimous decision over Carlos Jacobo of Mexico last October 15, 2011, dropping Jacobo once in the eighth round to improve his record to 15-1-1 with 12 knockouts.

This time around the 21 year old, 5?7? southpaw wants to demonstrate that his new-found dedication in the gym is paying off when he faces the 5'9" Fulgencio who has a record of 19-5-1 with 12 knockouts which proves that the Dominican Republic fighter can punch.

Fulgencio has won three of his last four fights by TKO including a split decision win over fancied Oswaldo Castro (11-3-1, 8 KO?s) in Mexico City on August 20, 2011.

Fulgenio fought two of the best fighters in his division but lost. He was knocked out in the 6th round by the undefeated current world champion Abner Mares on August 27, 2009 after taking some vicious body shots and also lost by a 2nd round TKO to another talented fighter in Antonio Escalante (21-2) in El Paso, Texas on October 30, 2009.

The fight card of well-known promoter Sammy Gello-ani will also feature a Philippine lightweight championship bout between Jay Solmiano and Rey Labao, two talented and hard-hitting southpaws.

Nicknamed ?Rapido?, the 24 year old Solmiano has a record of 11-1-1 with 7 knockouts while the 26 year old Labao has a record of 21-4 with 13 knockouts.

Solmiano won the title by a 4th round disqualification when veteran Cris Alag was guilty of repeated low blows for which he had been deducted two points in round three by referee Ver Abainza and was disqualified in the next round when he continued to resort to the illegal tactic.

However, he lost by a close split decision in an Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation title fight to Japan?s 30 year old Nihito Arakawa ( 21-1-1, 14 KO?s) last October 4, 2011.

The 26 year old Labao is coming off a big win against talented Jose Ocampo on August 6, 2011 when Ocampo was badly cut above the right eyebrow and referee Sammy Bernabe ruled it an accidental head-butt resulting in Labao winning a technical 5th round decision based on the scorecards of the three judges.

However, TV slow-motion replays by AKTV IBC 13 which telecast the fight from the picturesque Island Cove in Cavite showed the cut was caused by a solid punch and not a head-butt.
