PARAGUA VS BARBOSA MATCH

WITH the renaissance of Philippine chess, Grandmasters Mark Paragua and Oliver Barbosa hope to do their own share by renewing their rivalry in a best of four blitz exhibition match put up by Paragua Chess Academy, in partneship with Victory Central Mall, Manila Broadcasting Company and Filway Marketing Inc.

Paragua and Barbosa, both former child chess prodigies ended their game in a figthing draw during their fifth round encounter in the 3rd Gov. Amado T. Espino Cup Chess Tournament held December 17 and 18 at the Provincial Training and Development Center, near the provincial capitol in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Barbosa amassed a total of 6.5 points to win the championship in the third edition of the tournament sponsored by the Pangasinan provincial government and organized by the Pangasinan Chess Federation (PCF) led by it's President
Juan Vicente Sison and Secretary General Ron Vergara and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.

The rematch between two of the country?s leading GMs kicks off on December 30 at the Victory Central Mall, Caloocan City, a special added feature in a one-day rapid chess tournament, divided info three divisions: non-master, juniors division (18-year-old and below) and kiddies division (14-year-old and below), with prizes ranging from P15,000 to P300.

Tournament organizer eng'r. Ricardo Paragua hopes that by coming up with the Paragua-Barbosa duel, more and more Filipinos will be encouraged to take up the sport.
