WHAT A GREAT WEEKEND IT HAS BEEN, TRULY A SEASON'S BEATINGS TO EVERY FIGHT FAN

Pinoy Pride X, Island Assault III and Capital Showdown were shown on free TV last Sunday just minutes apart from each other and were broadcast on rival local TV networks which featured some of the best in the fight game. It is really been a great antagonism to fight fan's gain between these giant TV networks as we get to watch great boxing cards minus cable TV fees. ABS-CBN Sports played Pinoy Pride X, GMA for Island Assault III and AKTV/TV5 for Capital Showdown.

And not just were able to literally watch those fights, we're treated to real world-class boxing action worthy of being called the "fight weekend of the year." Let's start with Pinoy Pride X, Boom-Boom stopped fearsome Mexican Miguel Angel Mendoza but what caught the attention of many was undefeated ALA prospect Genesis "Azukal" Servania of Bacolod City. I overheard a few from were I was seated saying, "mao diay ni ilang ingon nga si Genesis Servania, maayo jud!" (This is what they've been talking about, Genesis Servania and he's good)

It was also my first time to see him fight, methodical but deliberate with his shots. All I can say from a first impression point-of-view, which I think is shared by many who witnessed him perform for the first time is that he may taste as sweet as the great "Sugar's" of the past. That may be an overstatement and sounds exaggerated but who knows, back in the late 90's we didn't expect Manny Pacquiao to become great he is today.

Rocky Fuentes, the ever humble OPBF flyweight champion, stopped this Thai foe to bring the crowd on its feet and change the mood in a rather uneventful night. We're hoping he may get a crack at a world title early next year.

Next was Island Assault III. What a brawl! One of our main concern going into the fight was Brian Viloria's stamina, that he will fade in the later rounds. But we we're told he did his gym assignments and he was right. And practically, he turned former P-4-P entrant Giovani Segura's right upper face into grotesque-looking never before seen in a boxing match. Hasim Rahman is a heavyweight but the bulge he suffered from headbutts against Evander Holyfield is only a miniature M and M's to Segura's gigantic Toblerone. It was learned that he had a broken orbital floor and we're hoping he's ok. Unbeaten prospect Al Sabaupan looks good and continues to impress us.

Amir Khan was supposed to run over Lamont Peterson in the main offering of Capital Showdown and looks likely at the start, with Khan using his superb speed to confuse both Peterson and referee Joe Cooper, who was unable to call the first trip a knockdown which replays show the more legit than the second one, which Cooper called a knockdown. Good thing Khan wasn't able to finish him off and what followed was an unfolding of a "Fight of the Year" or "Upset of the Year" candidate, either one is ideal.

We're glad local TV rivalry has expanded it's contention into covering the Sweet Science. Continue the good work!
and Season's Beatings to everyone!
