Former Philippine featherweight champion Vinvin Rufino has been knocked out in the 5th round by Mexico?s WBC Continental Americas super featherweight champion Alejandro Sanabria in a WBC Silver lightweight title fight in Mexico City.

The 5?6? Rufino who had lost three of his last four fights according to boxrec.com was no match for the Sanabria who was over three inches taller and was too good for the Filipino southpaw.

With the win Sanabria improved his record to 30-1-1 with 23 knockouts while Rufino dropped to 30-15-3 with 14 knockouts.

Sanabria won the vacant WBC Continental Americas super featherweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over world title challenger Rocky Juarez last February and followed this up with a 4th round TKO of Alejandro Barrera last September 3.

Barrera had earlier suffered a 3rd round knockout at the hands of Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista who battles undefeated Mexican Miguel Angel Mendoza (17-0-1, 17 KO?s) on Saturday at the Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu.

Before what the WBC reported was Sanabria?s biggest and most important challenge of his career, the Mexican said ?I?m happy for having this chance to fight for the WBC title. I won?t let it get away, I?m ready to take it, I had an excellent training and I?m in the best shape, I?ll show it on the ring? assured the fighter that is promoted by Promociones del Pueblo and who?s managed by his father Alejandro Sanabria.

Looking ahead at winning and earning a wrld title shot Sanabria said ?I want to end this year with a victory. It won?t be an easy fight. All the bouts against Philippine fighters are complicated, but I trust in my potential, if we win this fight we?ll be close to the chance of fighting for the world title?.
