WBC light middleweight/super welterweight champion Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez, fresh from an impressive 5th round TKO win over former champion Kermit Cintron, says he wants undefeated Floyd Mayweather next.
The popular undefeated Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO?s) in a post fight interview on HBO said he wants Mayweather Jr since Mayweather has set a May 5 date for his ring return at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Alvarez said a fight with Mayweather was not about the money but an opportunity for him to test himself against the best in the world.
The Mexican youngster called out Mayweather after an impressive showing against Cintron (33-5-1, 28 KO?s) at the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City, Sunday, in a fight telecast by AKTV Channel 13 at 9:00 p.m.
Alvarez caught Cintron with some short, snappy punches in the early rounds before dropping him with a cracking right hand in round four with Cintron struggling to make it to his corner at the end of the round.
Alvarez nailed Cintron with another hard right that sent the challenger hanging on to the ropes forcing referee Hector Afu to call a halt at 2:53 of the round. At the time of the stoppage all three judges had Alvarez by a 40-35 shutout.
Alvarez is handled by Golden Boy Promotions who also work closely with Mayweather?s camp and adviser Leonard Ellerbe.
The entry of Alvarez comes at a time when fight fans and media have been urging Ring Magazine?s pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao to talk to his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank and insist that he works on a Mayweather fight.
Pacquiao himself said the other day that negotiations were going on with the Mayweather camp but his adviser Michael Koncz who is close to Arum said he hadn?t heard about the supposed negotiations even as Arum himself indicated he was looking at a fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez following Pacquiao?s close but controversial majority decision win last November 12.
However, David Mayo of the Grand Rapids Press who is close to the Mayweather camp informed the Manila Standard that talks for a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight ?sounds premature to me but maybe they?ve started to talk this week.?
Mayo however promised to check out the report with Mayweather's handlers and get back to us.
