World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman says that all the statistics and evidence ?are totally inclined without a doubt in favor of Manny Pacquiao? in his showdown with WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday, Manila Time and ?it would be an unbelievable deed if the fight goes the other way? and Marquez wins.
Sulaiman told the Manila Standard that he has been well understood even in Marquez?s hometown of Mexico when he publicly stated that Pacquiao ?is far superior to the Marquez of today.?
The WBC president noted that Marquez first fough Pacquiao seven years ago and the rematch took place some four years ago and that Marquez is ?a natural super featherweight and perhaps a lightweight at most? while Pacquiao is ?strong as a bull and a small welterweight.?
Sulaiman claimed Pacquiao beat Marquez twice, taking into account judge Burth Clements admission that he made a mistake in scoring the opening round in their first fight 10-7 when it should have been 10-6 because of the three knockdowns scored by Pacquiao which would have given Pacquiao a victory.
The WBC president said that Marquez ?has beaten mediocre fighters in close fights like Juan D?az and the Michael Katsidis while Manny has beaten Oscar De la Hoya, Miguel Coto, Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley.?
He added, ?Marquez was knocked down and lost every round to Floyd Mayweather Jr in their fight? and posed the question ?who are the promoters trying to cheat? and why??
Sulaiman claimed he can express his thoughts on the third fight in their memorable trilogy ?as their fight will not be for the WBC title, even when both have been WBC champions in the past.?
The WBC president stated bluntly that ?Statistics and boxing common sense do not give an opportunity to M?rquez.?
He pointed out that M?rquez is 38 years old and ?his age and moving up to welterweight make him slower by nature? and although Marquez beat Joel Casamayor, Juan D?az, Marco Antonio Barrera and Michael Katsidis they were in his opinion of ?a much lower level than those who Manny fought and beat? including De La Hoya, Hatton, Cotto, Margarito and Mosley.
Sulaiman recalled that Pacquiao and Marquez have fought twice with a draw and a win for Pacquiao but that the ?Manny of those fights is definitely the giant of today, has changed his style and now also uses the right hand and also boxes around, which he didn't do in the past.?
While conceding that M?rquez ?is one of the great counter punchers of today and was difficult for Pacquiao 4 years ago, but not today anymore.?
Sulaiman concluded ?This is not a prediction as anything can happen in boxing. It is plainly a warning to the boxing fans not to be misguided, specially in a city of gambling (Las Vegas) but just to make them aware that if Juan Manuel M?rquez defeats Manny Pacquiao it will be one of the greatest deeds of boxing today.?
ABS-CBN?s Dyan Castillejo told us that Pacquiao jogged in the morning and ?ran really hard.? She said during a workout with Filipino trainer Buboy Fernandez, Pacquiao ?accentuated his speed? which is expected to be a key factor in the trilogy with Marquez.
The Mexican legend Marquez conceded that Pacquiao has ?a little more speed and uses his right hand more? but said he had adjusted and his strategy is ?to nullify all of that.?
