WBC super flyweight champion Suriyan Por Chokchai of Thailand makes the first defense of the title he won from Mexico?s Tomas Rojas last August 19 when he faces Japan's Nobuo Nashiro at Bangkok's Nimibutr gymnasium today.
Aware of the hardships suffered by the victims of massive floods in Thailand, the 22 year old Suriyan told the Bangkok Post "I want to win for those who are affected by the floods."
The Thai champion?s manager Suchart Wisitwutthinan did not underestimate the challenger although he believed the Japanese was not as good as Rojas pointing out that "Nashiro may not be as skilful as Rojas but he is more powerful."
Suchart indicated he was concerned that Suriyan had not fought a right-hander for quite a long time as his most recent opponents, compatriot Pongsaklek Wonjongkam to whom he lost by a twelve round unanimous decision in a title fight on October 8, 2010 and Rojas were both southpaws. Besides, the champion had just over one month to prepare for today's bout after training for some six months for his title fight against Rojas.
However, the manager predicted Suriyan who has a record of 19-4-1 with 7 knockouts would retain his title against Nashiro (15-3-1, 9KOs) who for his part said he had worked hard for the fight in an attempt to become a world champion for the third time.
Nashiro dropped a unanimous twelve round decision to Hugo Fidel Cazares on May 8, 2010 and then lost also by a unanimous decision to Roas last February 5 also in a title showdown. The 30-year-old is a former two-time WBA super-flyweight champion.
