Rodel Mayol is one day away from fight night in his adopted state of California, and he is ready to put on a show in front of his family and friends come Thursday night. Mayol is one of three Filipino fighters featured in a card promoted by no less than the pound for pound king himself, Manny Pacquiao. The event dubbed as World Class Championship Boxing features Bernabe Concepcion and Richie Mepranum as the other two Pinoy pugs suiting up for action tomorrow night at the San Manuel Indian Casino in Highland, California.

Mayol was originally booked to fight Mexican Luis Maldonado in a Super Flyweight match but Maldonado withdrew from the bout. He will now face American Ernie Marquez of Fort Morgan, Colorado. This will be his first venture in the 115 weight class of which he is excited to fight at. "I'm climbing up in weight because there are a lot of good fighters in the heavier weights," he told me last night in an interview. "Plus I'm getting bigger," he added.

Mayol said he has prepared well for this fight. He joined Pacquiao's camp in Baguio for three weeks right after his last fight in Cebu last August. "I learned a lot of techniques from him (Pacquiao) during our training camp," said Mayol. He then moved with Pacquiao to the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles after their stint in Baguio. Pacquiao trainers, Nonoy Neri and Buboy Fernandez also train the boxer from Mandaue City, Cebu. They are joined by Jeremiah Quijano and cut man Jessie Arevalo. He said training camp went really well and he is on track on making the 115 weight limit. "Right now my focus is just making weight. I am just one pound over the limit," Mayol declared. He said there were no problems in making weight because he did not have to lose a lot for this fight.

Mayol aims to impress everyone tomorrow night. This will be his first time fighting in the Los Angeles area where he is now based. His family and friends will be coming to watch him and that increases his motivation to do well in the ring. His promoter and mentor, Manny Pacquiao will also be there to see him fight and he plans not to disappoint him as well. "I will give my best to impress Congressman Manny Pacquiao," he said. "I will do everything I can, to make our "kababayans" happy this Thursday.

Mayol said that if he wins Thursday night against Marquez, he might have a chance in fighting in Las Vegas next month. He can be included in either the undercard of Pacquiao versus Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12 at the MGM Grand or the night before in a Top Rank promoted fight at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. That is, if he wins and wins without suffering any major cuts or is not too fatigued from Thursday's fight. "It is really important for me to win this fight. If there is a chance, I want to knock him out in the early rounds," he declared.

Rodel Mayol is primed and ready for a good showing in the ring tomorrow night. And as the dices roll in the San Manuel Casino tomorrow night, "Batang Mandaue" will be too.
