New York, New York - Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire was willing to put on a show under the bright lights of New York but Omar Andres Narvaez is not.
Donaire, the defending bantamweight division of the world found himself without a partner to his much anticipated big dance in the Big Apple. Donaire started on fire throwing volleys of left hooks and uppercuts right from the get go which the smaller Narvaez dodged successfully. Narvaez was mobile; he darted in and out after a jab against a pressing Donaire. He used the ring to his advantage moving around it like a frog. He also had his hands high in all twelve rounds of the fight. A strategy that worked for him as he blocked most of what Donaire threw. Donaire's combos hit the leather instead of the Argentinean's face.
In the 3rd round, the clearly frustrated Filipino champ switched from southpaw to orthodox to try a different technique. The chants of Argentina echoed in the background as Donaire's misses were hard to ignore making Narvaez look good in dodging it. A right hook stunned Narvaez but he stood his ground and got off the ropes when Donaire closed in on him. The lack of action in the ring produced boos and heckling from the close to 4500 crowd here at The Theatre of MSG. The inability of Donaire to produce agitation from Narvaez was getting to the crowd who came here expecting a fight. Something that Donaire was aware of.
"I'm sorry that it did not come out the way we all wanted," the apologetic Donaire said after the fight. "I'm sure he is great in Argentina but he did not come here to fight," said Donaire.
Donaire, despite the frustration still went in there willing to make it a war. He tried taunting Narvaez by sticking out his head. He let his hands down hoping that will tempt Narvaez to make his move. But to no avail. The Argentinean was content to make it on his feet to the end of the fight.
"I know now how Pacquiao felt when he fought Clottey," stated Donaire. He was referring to Joshua Clottey's strategy against Pacquiao in Dallas last year. "He just came here to get his check," said the frustrated Donaire of his opponent.

Even with the seemingly unattractive fight, Donaire was dominant tonight. He was the aggressor. He was the stalker. He was the busier fighter. He threw in 666 total punches against only 299 by Narvaez. He landed a dismal 99 of it though, 25 more than Narvaez landed. He threw in 400 power punches and landing 85 of them against Narvaez's 116. Narvaez connected only 33 of it on Donaire. Narvaez was truly in here to move around and not get hit. And that he did well.
Donaire might not have the outcome he wanted. His "satisfying result" was not here tonight. He is hurt more by the boos and the heckling from the crowd more than Narvaez hurt him. But that is what is expected of him here where the big fishes play. The big league that is the Big Apple expects nothing more than a fight. But you can't blame Donaire for not doing that tonight.
