New York, New York - The Theatre of Madison Square Garden is packed early tonight. The atmosphere in the arena is electric, the crowd is excited and the arena is ready with still 3 hours more to go before the main event. The crowd chanted and cheered from the opening bell of the first bout and lasted all night. The following are the undercard results of tonight's event:
The first fight of the night started the night with a bang. Hometown kid and welterweight Cletus Seldin of Brooklyn, NY 3-0 (1 KO) got the crowd pumped early with a 2nd round TKO of Jose Segura Torres of Miami, Florida 2-2-2 (1 KO). The almost packed theatre was on their feet early after referee Eddie Claudio stopped the bout at the 2:52 mark of round number 2.
Michael Zewski 10-0 6 (KOs) of Trois - Rivieres, Canada made quick work of fellow welterweight Keuntray Henson of Memphis, TN, 4-3 1 (1 KO). The hard punching Canadian dropped Henson early in the opening round with a headshot and Henson barely got up to continue the fight. He followed it up seconds later with a left hook to the head which dropped him yet again. This time, Henson would stay in the canvass and would stay there long. The official time of the KO was 1:27 of the 1st round.
The New York crowd was once again on their feet as Long Beach's own Sean Monaghan 9-0 (6 KOs) continued the home town dominance. Monaghan started slow against Anthony Pietrantonio 7-7 (5 KOs) of Sharon, PA but picked it up right away in the 2nd round. He pummeled the game Pietrantonio in the next four rounds en route to a TKO victory in the 5th. The bloodied Pietrantonio took a lot of punishment from the heavy handed Irish heavyweight which he tried to fight toe to toe with. A straight right from Monaghan in the 5th spelled the end to Pietrantonio's game effort. He was stunned after that and was unable to retaliate as Monaghan rained punches on him. The crowd was ecstatic after referee Eddie Claudio stopped it at 2:51 of the round for their hometown fighter. Monaghan improved his unbeaten record to 10 and 7 KO's.
In a battle of Super Flyweights, Jonathan Gonzales 5-0 (5 KOs) of Caguas, Puerto Rico stayed unbeaten after earning a 6 round UD win over Jose Rivera 3-3-2 of New Rochelle, NY. Gonzales dropped Rivera in the 2nd round but Rivera recovered from it and engaged Gonzales in the remaining of the fight. Gonzales was the more accurate and faster puncher of the two and Rivera was just unable to match him in the fight. The scores were 60 -53 x 2 and 59 - 54 from the judges at ringside.
There was a break in the fight as our very own Tiffany Viray and Liana Sta. Ana led the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the US National Anthem respectively. The two young girls wowed the crowd with their incredible voice and rendition of their respective pieces. They were applauded heavily by the sold out crowd here at the Garden.
The action resumed with a 6 round welterweight bout between Tommy Rainone 15-4 (4 KOs) of Long Island, NY against Brad Jackson 13-6-1 (7 KOs) of Denver, CO. Rainone added another win for the home state as he eked out a hard earned victory against the taller Jackson. The scores were 60-54, 59-55 and 58-56.
In the night's co-main event, Miguel Angel Garcia 26-0 (22 KOs) made a good statement in his first outing in New York with a 4th round TKO of Juan Carlos Martinez 17-12-1 (5 KOs) of San Luis, Potosi, Mexico. Garcia had a mouse under his left eye as early as the 2nd round but did not stop him from hitting his target. Garcia dropped Martinez initially in the 3rd round with a well-placed left hook. Martinez got up from the knockdown and survived the remainder of the round as Garcia landed heavily on him. Garcia who is Robert Garcia's younger brother finished the job in the 4th in spectacular fashion. A right hook from Garcia dropped the Mexican yet again in the round as his punches found its target accurately. He attacked the stunned Martinez furiously right after the 8 count forcing referee Harvey Dock to halt the fight. With the win, Garcia successfully defended his NABF version of the featherweight belt. His performance tonight will indeed make him close to fighting for a world title soon, one which Robert clearly wishes for his younger brother. The time of the stoppage was 2:46 of the 4th.
It was a battle of the lightweights that ended the undercard fights for tonight. Mike Brooks 5-0 (1 KO) of Oceanside, NY remained undefeated with a 4 round UD win over Eddie Ramirez 6-9-1 (3 KOs) of Laredo, TX. Brooks was the more accurate puncher of the two, as he landed lefts on Ramirez the entire night. He was the more active of the two too as he pressed the Texan native in four rounds. The scores were a sweep of 40 -36 on all three judges card.
