New York - The world famous Gleason's gym in Brooklyn, New York played host to Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire's first workout in the Big Apple and a public workout at that.
With a week before his first New York City headlined event at the WAMU Theater of the famed Madison Square Garden (MSG) next Saturday, Donaire invited both the media and fans to see him up close and personal in the ring in this famed boxing gym.
Donaire first answered questions from the crowd as he taped his hands prior to the mitt work and workout. He did the mitts with former world junior welterweight champion turned trainer, Morris East to the delight of everyone who attended the event. He showcased his speed, punching ability and footwork as the media and fans alike fired away with their cameras and cellphones. He then put some work on the heavy bag afterwards as the crowd followed him in a section of the gym dedicated to the event.

Donaire was very relaxed throughout the workout as he entertained the crowd with his imitations of boxers past and present and his Robert De Niro impression. He and wife Rachel also announced the winner of their popular internet search of who gets to sing the American and Philippine national anthem next Saturday. Lianah Sta. Ana of Freehold, New Jersey was chosen by the couple to sing the U.S. national anthem while Tiffany Viray of the same town was picked to sing the Philippine national anthem among hundreds of entrants. The two sang their respected pieces which drew admiration and cheers from everyone in the gym.
People working out in the gym had to literally stop what they are doing and stood in attention as the US anthem was sung by Sta. Ana. Donaire then gave everyone the opportunity to have their pictures taken with him and have their gloves, pictures, shirts and hats autographed by the current bantamweight champion of the world.
It was a fun day event for everyone who attended the event aimed to promote his October 22 fight with undefeated Argentinean Omar Andres Narvaez. The following are images from Saturday's open workout as taken by Philboxing's Rich Mazon.
