Former WBO super flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona must regain his marvelous boxing skills when he battles Mexican warrior Carlos Jacobo at the air-conditioned Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu.
Touted as one of the most promising youngsters after he won the world title at the age of 19, Sonsona claims he is determined to fight his way back to the top and win a world title. But, as promoter Sammy Gello-ani points out, first things first.
Obviously elated over Sonsona?s new-found dedication Gello-ani said he confidently picked Jacobo, the 24 year old Mexican with an impressive record of 14 knockouts in 16 wins with 3 defeats and 1 draw.
Sonsona almost matches Jacobo?s record with 14 wins, 1 defeat and I draw with 12knockouts to his name.
The only real blemish on Sonsona?s record is his 4th round knockout loss to previously undefeated WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr on February 27 last year in Puerto Rico.
Sonsona made a temporary return to training camp but after two weeks packed his bags and returned to his hometown of General Santos City.
It seems that with young fighters probably less skilled beginning to make a name for themselves and also starting to earn some good money, Sonsona decided to once again return to the sport where most aficionados believe he has the innate skill and punching power to shine.
All this will be put to the test tomorrow but in assessing Sonsona?s performance against Jacobo it is important to remember that he?s been away for almost 20 months and that in boxing is a long time and can take its toll in terms of ring rust which would affect his timing at the very least.
Rigorous training in the gym cannot compensate for actual fights and although Marvin has trained diligently for the past two months and sparred with bigger fighters like Rey Labao, Jimrex Jaca and Weng Haya and at times with Dodie Boy Penalosa it may take all his innate talent and power to win against a tried and tested challenger who is the reigning Mexican champion.
The advantage Sonsona has is the fact that he is a southpaw and has a decided reach advantage but Jacobo has said he has the answer to that with his vicious right straight.
To impress fans Sonsona must duplicate his smashing one-punch knockout of former WBC light flyweight interim champion Wandee Singwancha in Cebu on May 28,2009 which earned for Marvin a title shot at Jose ?Carita?Lopez whom he dominated to win the world title on September 4, 2009 in Ontario, Canada.
Most boxing writers and fight fans are intrigued with this fight and want to see whether Sonsona is back with a vengeance as the title of the fight card suggests.
Even Smart Gilas national basketball team captain Chris Tiu asked us yesterday how Sonsona was and what his chances are of beating Jacobo.
If Chris Tiu?s question is a measure of the interest in this fight then AKTV IBC Channel 13 which will telecast the fight card ?Live? beginning at 9:00 p.m.is bound to attract the kind of viewership it is hoping to get and promoter Sammy Gello-ani the crowd that would make Sonsona?s return a worthwhile endeavor.
