Carlos Jacobo.
?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona?s opponent for his comeback fight on October 15 at the Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City arrived on Monday evening in Cebu and said he is ready to do battle.
Promoter Sammy Gello-ani told Viva Sports that 24 year old Carlos ?Lightning? Jacobo informed him that he had ?intense training for two months? and is in great shape and looking forward to his battle with the former WBO world super flyweight champion Sonsona.
Both Jacobo and Sonsona together with promoter Sammy Gello-ani will be in Manila at noon on Wednesday for a press conference at Max's Restaurant in Greenbelt 1 to be hosted by ABC 5 which will telecast the fight ?Live? over AKTV IBC Channel 13 .
The 24 year old Jacobo has a record of 16-3-1 with 14 knockouts and is the reigning Mexican and FECOMBOX super bantamweight champion.
Jacobo won the vacant FECOMBOX title with a 5th round TKO over Luis Cadena last April 16 after winning Mexico?s 122 pound title against Rafael Gutierrez who retired in the 8th round in their title fight on July 17, 2010.
Jacobo is coming off a ten round draw against Victoriano Nunez last June 18.
Sonsona is returning to the ring after a layoff of almost 20 months following his 4th round knockout loss to WBO champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr of Puerto Rico on February 27 last year.
Sonsona had earlier won the WBO super flyweight title with an impressive twelve round decision over Jose ?Carita? Lopez also of Puerto Rico in Ontario, Canada on September 4, 2009. However, he lost the title on the scales when he failed to make the weight in his first defense against Alejandro Hernandez on Novemberv21, 2009. The fight ended in a draw and Sonsona decided to move up two weight divisions and challenge Vazquez Jr.
Promoter Sammy Gello-ani told Viva Sports that Sonsona has been training diligently and ?there seems to be no problem with his weight.?
Gello-ani said Sonsona is determined to make a rousing comeback and win a second world title. He said the young fighter is committed to boxing and informed him that after his fight with Jacobo he ?will not return to his home in GenSan but will continue and train more in Cebu.?
Sonsona has a new trainer, Celso Epanto who has had him spar with Weng Haya, Rey Labao, Dodie Boy Penalosa Jr and also Jimrex Jaca who has a scheduled fight this November.
Gello-ani assured fight fans that Sonsona ?is committed this time and is motivated and I?m so happy with his attitude now. I think we can project something good from him. I hope his attitude will not change. It?s a matter of handling him and he?s happy to be here in Cebu.?
