WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire (26-1,18 KO?s) says a knockout over undefeated WBO two-division world champion Omar Andres Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KO?s) in their clash in the Wa Mu Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York on October 22 (23 in Manila) will be most satisfying.
Donaire was speaking to ABS-CBN?S North American Bureau after a workout in preparation for the first title defense of the crown he won with a sensational 2nd round stoppage of Mexican veteran Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel last February 19 in Las Vegas which was telecast ?live? over ABS-CBN Channel 2.
The Donaire-Narvaez title showdown will also be telecast ?live? over the giant broadcast network.
Donaire said ?For me a more satisfying victory is a knockout victory. I would look for that if I can see it but I'm not going to force the issue, and that's why I trained really hard. We rely more on how hard we work when it comes to fights. We want to make it exciting because I have what it takes to go 12 rounds or how many rounds they want.?
Donaire said he usually decides what he?s going to do in the ring once he gets started adding ?I usually decide what I?m going to do in the ring. It's usually imposing my will, imposing my style. We do want to see where he stands, how he punches, how he positions his body, and the like.?
The champion who will be fighting in Madison Square Garden for the first time couldn?t hide the thrill of fighting in what was once regarded as the ?Mecca of Boxing.? He told ABS-CBN ?I am very excited. This is a venue of where the greats...the name Madison Square Garden is what you remember when you say Joe Louis or Sugar Ray Robinson. I like the old school boxing. It's a great honor. I'm proud to mix it up with people who have been there.?
Donaire told the ABS-CBN television crew ?You're gonna witness something I don't usually do which is sparring.? He conceded that he was ?behind in sparring so we're going to let you guys just watch. I?m going to try to go 12 rounds to get ready so you guys will have confidence in me that if I can't take this guy early, I know i can go 12 rounds.?
With his promotional issues with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum resolved Donaire indicated he would keep on fighting and expects to return to the ring in January or February and either May or June.
Arum himself told Viva Sports that there is a real possibility that Donaire could face WBO super bantamweight champion Jorge ?Travieso? Arce early next year and WBC king Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan in mid-year.
For the Narvaez fight Donaire said he would wear something pink since the month of October is for breast cancer awareness. In a message women, Donaire said ? for all you ladies out there, you guys got to have a healthy lifestyle, check yourself. It's to bring awareness out there about breast cancer, how you can prevent and help yourself out and spread awareness to people.?
