The Philippines has suffered a second setback after three rousing early victories in the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

20 year old light welterweight Rolando Tacuyan lost to Iran?s rugged Mehdi Toloujibandpi 24-16.

Tacuyan, son of former national boxing coach Orlando Tacuyan Sr battled the Iranian on even terms in the opening round which ended 7-7 but Mehdi pulled away in the second round 7-4 to give himself a 14-11 lead.

Mehdi then poured the pressure on in the third and final round scoring 10 points to the r of Tacuyan to emerge winner and give the Philippines another blow in its quest for a 2012 London Olympics slot in the high-level qualifying tournament.

The PLDT-ABAP National team earlier suffered its first setback when Delfin Boholst dropped a hard-fought battle against the Netherlands Stephen Danyo 16-11.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson reported that Boholst tried to dictate the tempo of the fight by launching an early attack but the Dutch boxer proved to be an excellent counter puncher with quick hands enabling him to take the opening round 5-3.

Danyo increased his lead to 10-6 at the end of the second round and although Boholst went all out in the third and final round, crowding Danyo and throwing several punches the tenacious European Championship silver medalist held off the Filipino?s challenge and even added one more point to his edge to emerge winner by a 16-11 margin.

Light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga got the Philippines quest for an Olympic berth off to a spectacular start with a12-5 victory over fancied Romanian Stefan Caslarof while 2010 Asian Games flyweight gold medalist Rey Saludar edged Canada?s Kelly Lally 21-20 in day two action.

2006 Doha Asian Games bantamweight gold medalist Joan Tipon also scored a thrilling 13-12 win over hard-hitting counter puncher Albert Melian.

Tipon was chosen after Junel Cantancio fell ill just before the championships and the AIBA website said ?the veteran boxer did his best in his opening contest and eliminated South American Games silver medalist Melian by an extremely close 13-12 margin.? iminated South American Games silver medalist Argentinean Alberto Melian by an extremely close 13:12.?

Multi-title lightweight Charly Suarez will see action for the first time today against Luiz Porozo of Ecuador.

The Philippines is bannered by six boxers in the tournament which serves as the main qualifier for the London Olympics in 2012. A boxer needs to win at least 3 bouts to be eligible for the Olympiad.

The Philippine participation in the World Championships, backed by ABAP chairman Manny V. Pangilinan and Maynilad president and CEO Ricky Vargas, is funded by the Philippine Sports Commission and supported by PLDT, Adidas, Powerade, Accel and Clusivol.
