The Philippines has suffered its first setback after three stirring wins in the AIBA World Boxing Championships at the Hayder Aliyev Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan when welterweight Delfin Boholst lost to Stephan Danyo of the Netherlands, 16-11.

Earlier, 2006 Doha Asian Games bantamweight gold medalist Joan Tipon made it three wins in a row for the Philippines when he scored a thrilling 13-12 win over over hard-hitting counter puncher Alberto Melian of Argentina.

The AIBA website reported that ?due to Junel Cantancio?s illness former Asian Games winner Joan Tipon got involved in the Filipino squad just before the championships. The veteran boxer did his best in his opening contest and eliminated South American Games silver medalist Argentinean Alberto Melian by an extremely close 13:12.?

Light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga got off to a flying start on opening day with a rousing 12-5 victory over fancied Stefan Caslarov of Romania while 2010 Asian Games flyweight gold medalist Rey Saludar edged his opponent, Kelly Lally of Canada 21-20 on day two of action..

The tournament, which also serves as the main qualifier for boxing in the 2012 London Olympics, drew 570 boxers from 130 countries. The Philippines has 6 entries. At least 3 wins assure a boxer of a slot in the Olympiad.
