The World Boxing Council has issued a statement that it has ? not received any official request to sanction the fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez and the fighters currently have statutory commitments which they are obliged to comply with.?under the same WBC Rules and Regulations that have taken them to their respective world championships.
The WBC felt slighted at the announcement of a Chavez Jr- Alvarez fight and said ?It is not very courteous and respectable either, that promoters announce some fight before receiving authorization from the organization that recognizes their fighters as world champions, even though the WBC does not object at all to such a fight being carried out. ?
In fact, WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman told us some months ago when there was talk of a possible title fight between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and the popular Mexican star Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez that the youngster was not ready to face a fighter of the caliber of Pacquiao and would have to hone his skills over the next two years.
That position was effectively reiterated in the WBC news release which said ?It is our opinion that Julio, as well as Saul, could make several defenses to have more experience and higher international renown, as that is when they could earn much more money than the money they can earn now.?
The WBC noted its rules regarding mandatory fights stating that the winner of Julio Cesar Chavez vs Pete Manfredo, will have to fight WBC Diamond champion, Sergio Martinez in the first quarter of the next year, in accordance with what is stipulated by the WBC since Chavez officially fought for the world title.?
In relation to ?Canelo? Alvarez, the WBC made it clear that he will have to defend his title against the fighter who is appointed the official challenger, as Vanes Martirosyan declined to fight against Alfred Angulo in the final elimination bout.
Alvarez recently retained his154-pound title which he won after Pacquiao relinquished the title he won from Miguel Cotto, stopping Alfonso Gomez at 2:36 of the sixth round.
The undefeated Alvarez (38-0-1, 28 KOs) finished Gomez with a vicious uppercut and several big punches that forced referee Wayne Hedgpeth to call a halt with 24 seconds remaining in the round and Gomez claiming it was a premature stoppage.
Chavez Jr won the WBC middleweight title with a twelve round majority decision over Sebastian Zbik last June 4.
