The World Boxing Council has ruled that Sylvester ?Silver? Lopez is the new WBC super flyweight silver champion following an attempt by the promoter of defeated champion Oscar Ibarra to demand an option and failing to get it from Lopez? promoter Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde to decide that the silver belt was not on the line and since Ibarra lost, to declare it vacant.
However, WBC executive director Mauricio Sulaiman in a swift response to our request for clarification stated very clearly ?Sylvester Lopez is the New WBC Silver champion. That is the final decision by the WBC President (Don Jose Sulaiman). Congratulations.?
In an email to Mauricio Sulaiman, Elorde noted that ?Before the fight they announced that the fight was for the WBC silver title and the WBC super flyweight final eliminator.?
He said they even deducted $500 from Lopez? purse and he was told by a staff member of Mexican promoter Herminaldo Kuchle that it was for the WBC Silver sanction fee.
Elorde added that after Lopez won by an 8th round TKO over Ibarra, the ring announcer declared that the new WBC silver champion is Silvester Lopez. Elorde insisted that ?before the fight nobody told me of any options? adding that he doesn?t think Filipino, Mexican and other boxing fans world wide would like to read and hear a decision that would deprive Lopez who won fair and square on top of the ring.
Elorde also revealed that the trainer of Ibarra ?took away the belt from Lopez and said that the silver belt belongs to Ibarra.?
Meantime, Mauro Betti congratulated Lopez for ?his great win? and stated that as a result of his victory the WBC International title ?must now be vacated? and that current WBC International champion Oleydong Sithsamnerchai of Thailand will fill fight for the full international belt.
