ALDEGUER LOOKING AT TITLE ELIMINATOR FOR MELINDO

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer, aware of the almost impossible task of getting a world flyweight champion to come to the Philippines and defend his title against undefeated Milan Melindo, is looking at getting a title eliminator for Melindo as a first step in his quest for a world title shot.

Aldeguer told the Daily Inquirer that he would explore the possibility of promoting a title eliminator against Mexico?s Wilbert Uicab who is ranked No. 2 behind WBO champion Brian Viloria and also No. 2 behind WBC champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam and Edgar Sosa and No. 3 behind IBF champion Moruti Mthalane of South Africa with no fighters rated at No. 1 and 2.

WBO Asia Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo said Melindo who is ranked No. 5 by the WBO is certain to move up in the ratings after his dominating performance against Mexico?s Francisco Rosas over whom he scored an 11th round TKO and would discuss with WBO president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel the possibility of a title eliminator.

Aldeguer conceded that ?unless Melindo becomes a mandatory challenger it would be very difficult to get a world champion to come here unless you really offer him a big purse.?

The ALA Promotions president also pointed out that with Melindo?s reputation and his undefeated record a world champion would think twice about fighting the Filipino in his hometown.

In an impressive performance before a sell-out crowd at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu last Saturday Melindo cut down the heavier Mexican ?Chiquita? Rosas with some vicious combinations in the early rounds before hammering the Mexican into submission at the end of the tenth when referee Bruce McTavish called a halt to the obvious relief of the battered Mexican.

Rosas who originally tipped the scales at 117 pounds which was five pounds over the flyweight limit had said he was not interested in winning the regional WBO Intercontinental title but was determined to inflict pain on Melindo and beat him so he could enter the world rankings.

Melindo, a technically skilled fighter wasn?t prepared to let the bigger Mexican bully his way to victory and established his superiority when he bloodied the nose of Rosas in the fourth round with a stinging jab and a series of cracking right straights and uppercuts.

A wicked left in round five almost saw the mouthpiece of Rosas fly out as Melindo went after the Mexican in an impressive performance that showed he is ready for a world title shot.

Rosas was as game a Mexican fighter as one could find but although he fought for the world title three times and scored an impressive win over former world champion Jose Landaeta in a WBA light flyweight title eliminator earlier this year, he was dominated by Melindo as long as the fight lasted.
