Pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao, the reigning WBO welterweight champion and Mexican legend and WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez faced off at their World Press Tour stop in New York, Tuesday morning, late Wednesday, Manila Time.
Superstar Pacquiao and three-division world champion Marquez posed for the media during a press conference at Chelsea Piers in New York to kick off their North American world tour to announce the third world Welterweight title mega-fight of the Pacquiao-Marquez trilogy.
Their next stop will be Los Angeles and the tour ends up in Mexico City where the fans are expected to give both fighters a massive welcome.
The showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Area has almost been sold out with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum telling us during the media tour kick-off in Manila that only 50 tickets remained.
Arum said with every fight Pacquiao is doing better in terms of pay-per-view buys and that the fight last May against Shane Mosley had around 1.4 million households.
The third fight in the eagerly-awaited trilogy is promoted by Top Rank, in association with MP Promotions, Marquez Boxing,Tecate and MGM Grand, Pacquiao vs Marquez III will take place, Saturday, Nov. 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and be produced and distributed by HBO Pay Per View.
Pacquiao didn?t burn US dollar bills like Floyd Mayweather Jr did fairly recently but he did burn some big money shopping.
Boxing writer Abac Cordero who is with the Pacquiao entourage reported that Pacquiao shopped at the Louis Vuitton store along plush Fifth Avenue where he ?kept the cash register ringing.?
Cordero said Pacquiao walked in wearing a pair of Dickies shades and walked out sporting a stylish, gold-plated LU sunglasses worth $3,000.
But the big catch was the LV Tambour diver watch worth $27,000 which was reportedly one of only 250 and could work as deep as 300 meters for a scuba diving boxing icon. The watch is made of red gold and Pacquiao proudly showed it off when posing with Marquez at the media event.
That was not all. Pacquiao who has clearly developed a taste for fine clothes purchased a pair of d ark jeans, a few dress shirts, belts, a pair of shoes and luggage all by the signature Louis Vuitton brand.
An overwhelmed store manager offered the Pacquiao entourage just about anything including champagne, scotch, sodas and coffee.
