A new training scheme being implemented by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) can produce 100 percent better performance from the athletes the country is fielding in the coming Southeast Asian Games this coming November in Indonesia.

This performance enhancing special training procedure that involves sports science has so far produced positive results for the concerned athletes that have undergone the tests, according to Dr. Charlie Ho, a member of the POC Medical team, who appeared as one of the guests in Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.

Dr. Ho, director of Sports Vision Center and in-charge of the athletes? optometrist requirements, said during the forum, sponsored by Coca Cola Export, FILA, TV-5 and UNTV, that the response of those examined thus far are very encouraging.

?The initial batch of 100 or so athletes whose vision we have tested have responded well leading us to believe that they should also be performing from 50 to 100 percent better in the Jakarta SEA Games, ? Dr. Ho, who attended the session along with Prof. Oscar Sentelices and Prof. Jeffrey Pagaduan, both of the University of the Philippines College of Human Kenetics, and physical conditioning expert Nico D?Haenen. assured.

Dr. Ho added though that of those whom they examined, only 55 percent have no visual defects and 45 percent need intervention.

?Those who did not pass will be required to come back to us and if results will be the same, we will be advising them to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses or other supplements needed,? he said. ?Some of those who are visually inefficient, I must say, too, will not be required to wear supplements because despite their handicap, they had been and continue to perform excellently.? ?Parang nakasananayan na nila ang depekto nila na kahit meron sila noon, maganda pa rin ang performance nila,? DR. Ho reasoned out.

Athletes in 12 spoprts, including sepak takraw, boxing, gymnastics and bowling have been subjected to visual tests.

Dr. Ho said he and the five other optometrists making up his team are working on a pro bono voluntary basis for the love of sports and country. Santelices and Pagaduan, for their part, their role in the medical team is to ensure that athletes are physically fit in terms of speed, agility and strength in the upper and lower body which they hope to attain by teaching, not only the athletes but the coaches as well, who actually are implementing the program.

?What we will be providing our national athletes is the right way to exercise to attain the purpose of acquiring accuracy and high reliability in athletes? performance,? Santelices said. Since the program was implemented, Pagaduan said, a little less than 400 athletes have been subjected to the tests and 50 do not need further examination to improve on their performance.
